Brent's 1954 Studebaker
Every couple of months I will feature a northern prairie car or truck that show the quality workmanship performed by rodders of the upper plains. Each of these vehicles have had all or a substantial part of the work done by the owners themselves. The first featured car is by a friend I first met when starting my own project, Brent a/k/a Doobie.
This 1954 Studebaker was built almost entirely in Doobie's home garage. A 327 small block with an Edelbrock 4 barrel carb is hooked to a Turbo 350 and a Maverick 8" rear.  Dual exhaust and a stainless steel gas tank finish the Stude's underside. A Mustang II front suspension with an updated 9" brake system and GM tilt column complete the steering and suspension. The car drives and rides better than new. The rear seat is stock but the Grand Am bucket seats, cruise, and air all provide comfort for both road and short trips. In addition to being dechromed, body modifications include a louvered hood and the use of 1975 Chrysler tail lights. The wheels from a 1975 Dodge Mirada look great when contrasted with the Stude's deep, black paint. The 5 years work paid off. This car always draws a crowd at each show or run.
Doobie's 1954 Studebaker received a particularly high honor when picked as the top custom at the 1998 Kool Deadwood Nites event held in Deadwood, South Dakota. Having attended the show and run myself, I can attest to the fact that there were many top-notch cars from throughout the Dakotas, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, and Montana, both home and professionally built. His Stude was picked as the best of the participants and the award was well-deserved. Not only did he receive a nice jacket, but also his car, along with the street rod winner, were featured on a poster and a post card (see above) and in all advertising for the next year's event.
