Tips for beginning a website in Yahoo GeoCities:
1.) Use either Firefox or Internet Explorer browsers. I recommend using the free FireFox browser because it has more secuirty than Windows Explorer. First go to the Yahoo.com website and click on "GeoCities". Then sign in if you have an account for e-mail or My Yahoo or Photos usage or you can create an account with a special title ID for your website. 2.) If you have not been collecting photos and graphics (.jpg and .gif format) yet, you can by right clicking on any photo picture you see in e-mails or blogs, and then do a "Save Image As". I have a special pctures folder with other subfolders to organize what I am collecting and to retrieve quickly. 3.) If you want to upload a simple one-page Excel worksheet or one-page MS Word file, you will need to File/Save As Web Page. This is a good way to get started if you are creating a page without using the Page Wizzards templates. 4.) For the fastest way of uploading picture, text, and worksheet files to the File Manager of GeoCities, first you should single click on the "Manage" tab and then the "Easy Upload" icon down to the left. Go to Number of Files to Upload: and choose up to 20 photos and pictures (.jpg and .gif format) from your computer files. All file names cannot have spaces or symbols in them and can be fixed before you select. The underline character can be used for a space. For any uploaded file click the Browse icon, starting with the top one. One line for each file. When you are finished finding the files to upload, click on the Upload Files icon below the list. If you want to delete any of the uploads, go to the File Manager.
5.) After you have uploaded the files you want to use in your first webpage creations, go back to the GeoCities Home page which showed right after you signed in. Do the first two items in the "Getting Started" module-- GeoCities Tour
and the Create a Web Site. Follow the directions carefully.
6.) To learn how to totally create your own pages, go back to the page "Create and Update" tab page and press the "Enhance with PageBuilder" icon. Use it to test out various features of the PageBuilder software. 7.) Clicking on Picture icon allows you to insert a picture or graphic that is in the software (Clipart) or is in your File Manager (User Files). If it is a graphic you want to make as a link, do the appropriate action in the lower part of the dialogue box. The photo, picture, or graphic can be resized and moved wherever on the page. The Download feature will not work if the pop-up blocker of the Windows Explorer is on.
8.) Clicking on the Text icon only allows you to make a new textbox, which you can move anywhere. If it is on another box, it will indicate that by red markings. It can be resized any way you want. You can type directly into it. But do not use the keyboard shortcuts; use the second row of icons. If you want to copy other text from an MS Word file or other file, first open and go into a text box, do the copy procedure in the original document (using the keyboard shortcuts if you want), press the clipboard icon, then paste the copied text into the box that appears, and click on the Paste icon. No tabs, bullets, or borders will transfer. You can make the font two sizes smaller. But what you see in a text box is not what you get. So to do lists of any type is tricky. Titles need to be done in separate text boxes in order to be centered over the related text. For tables, copy each column and paste via the PageBuilder clipboard one by one. 9. Check the pull downs and the row of icons.
When you are ready to begin a new page, click on the "New" icon at the top do File/New Page. You cannot use the Print Preview feature unless you turn off the pop-up blocker of your browser. Before I discovered that, after I saved a page I was working on, I also used the Geo-Cities screen by pressing the tab to the left of it and clicked on my website address to get into my website as a viewer to check it.
10.) In doing special lists for which you want fancy symbol or picture (like a folder) bullets in front of each list item or statement, what you see is not what you get. Make sure the pop-up blocker is off of the Windows Explorer is on. Then you can hit the Preview icon at the top to the left at any time. When you do the this the first time, another window will appear. You size it and the PageBuilder window that you are working in so that you can easily see what the needed changes are. 11.) Fact: navigation buttons are required to go to other pages. Be logical in how you place them. Remember how other websites you have used have them placed. Make sure each is referenced to a page that you have developed. For some, make text box labels. You can highlight them, copy them, and paste them into other PageBuilder pages, but be sure that you have saved the current page before.
12.) Let logic and the Holy Spirit guide you in the rest of discovering about the software.
