| A Recent History Of Newcroft | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Once, Berwickshire was a kingdom in its own right- one of the seven kingdoms that made up ancient Ithron. Then, a little over two hundred years ago came the Axirians. That mighty empire swept all resistance before it, engulfing the southern kingdoms till only Berwickshire and Lirron remained. At last Newcroft fell to the invaders, and the King was exiled (as were many other local nobles) to far off lands. Lirron was never to fall to Axir. In place of the king the north was ruled by a steward placed by the Empire; Lord Farron while in the west Carlech and the Marches became the lands of Earl Hightower, a Black Knight who quelled an uprising there a few years after the invasions. These t two families ruled in their respective lands until recently....
About five years ago the descendent of the King returned to Berwickshire, and threw out Lord Farron to claim the Kingdom as his right. He has been known only as Earl Berwick. In his time as ruler the Earl promoted economic and military expansion- building strong connections with local merchants, and recruiting the largest army in Ithron. Because of this and other reasons Berwick became very unpopular outside of his lands, and also within some sections of his own population- especially the church of Kharach and the adventuring classes. Farron was made an outlaw as was his protg, Cadrach ech Pernemwhey who became known as a popular bandit leader, always claiming his true inheritance as Lord of Newcroft. |

| 992 - there arose again the spectre of the great white liche of the north, Tsojcanth. He caused much pain and suffering in the lands, and much of the efforts of the adventuring community was towards his destruction. This culminated in an expedition l ed out by a master Necromancer named Anthrax who had the means to destroy the lichen. Unfortunately treachery was his plan, for he was in league with Tsojcanth and sought lichedom himself. Of his eleven companions only three were to escape alive. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

993 - a country festival in a village called Boxley on Tye was attended by the Earl and many visitors from the south. At this festival Tsojcanth was destroyed by a necromancer from the south.
Meanwhile the Axirians had been much in evidence in the area as they attempted once more to invade and subdue Lirron. The Axirian Consul was in due course revealed as a treacherous entity, demanding tribute as the "GodKing" and Ithron rose up against him. He was cast down at Summerfest 993 though many thousands were slaughtered. In reward for this valiant fight, Axir granted Thorns independence and Ithron was told to seek out its ancient High King. Also the great Fire bridge keep was built to house 600 Black Knights to defend Thorns northern border. Anthrax made a reappearance. Having completed the transition to Lichedom, his undead army rose in the forests of the north. Responding to this threat, many from Newcroft travelled out to defend the people from their former companion. Sir Ash, Marshal of the Templars was slain that day by Anthrax. This vile liche was eventually destroyed by Eldritch Happenstance, the master of Demonology in Ithron and a famous inhabitant of Newcroft, but this occasion also saw the death of Sir Oriog, Liege Knight of the Black Order. |

| 994 - Hightower was killed as thousands of Lirronese invaded the lands to the west. The barbarous invaders were eventually dispatched, but the Earl left no obvious heir. Sir Oriog nominated Morgan Hamilcar as Steward shortly before his death. Lord Hamilcar turned out to be very friendly with Earl Berwick, while he evicted many of the Black Order from the Northern Marches.
Shortly, a rivalry began to grow between Hamilcar and Marston Thomas, Lord of Pendrake to the south. This has eventually blossomed into civil war, with Berwick aiding Hamilcar and Cadrach apparently allied to Pendrake. This conflict has endured without t resolution to the time of writing... Pestilence came to Ithron as an age old prophecy came to pass. The search for the True king became urgent as people realized the pestilence would destroy the land and that the King was connected to it in some way. Summerfest saw several candidate claim the throne: Earl Berwick was one of these. However Sir Mortimer Baneheart of Norham was crowned king, but to destroy the pestilence he gave up the crown and sceptre. Meanwhile in Berwickshire a powerful group set out on a great quest to seek the Holy Scales of Sidhe that had been lost several years ago. Through great struggle the Scales were found, but their taking caused the release of the great white Lichen once more, for he had not been destroyed as we had hoped but merely entrapped. And this time his powers appeared to have grown... |

| 995 - the Liche and his foul armies rose up and challenged Berwickshire, casting pain and death throughout the lands. Newcroft fell while the people fled to the south or hid in caves in the north. At the same time, an army of the infidel Konn n landed upon Berwickshire's shores from the distant east. Armies from the south of Ithron were mustered to Berwickshire's relief, and in an epic battle the Konn were forced off and then the Liche was faced. He was not destroyed, but weakened and much of his undead force cast down. Newcroft was liberated, and the task of rebuilding begun.
After setting affairs in order, Earl Berwick gathered his forces and in a move that surprised all, set off on crusade to the lands of the Konn far to the east. He left Sir Robert de Sabloir as his Steward. Berwickshire has been left with much restoration on left to do, and with a desperate shortage of man-power. Law and order is in force only in certain areas. Meanwhile the rebuilding of Newcroft continues. |
