LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood
Reporter) --- Miramax Pictures has picked up domestic and select
international rights to the Hong Kong English-language action-thriller
"The Touch" starring Michelle Yeoh, who also produces
the film. Peter Pau, who won an Oscar for cinematography for "Crouching
Tiger, Hidden Dragon," makes his directorial debut on the film.
No release date has been set.
Budgeted at about $20 million, "Touch" is the first film
to come out of Mythical Films, a joint venture originally set up
between Yeoh and Hong Kong's Media Asia Films Group.
"Touch," set in China, is the story of a criminal gang
working within a major circus.
Sources said Miramax has acquired such overseas territories as Australia,
Latin America, New Zealand, Scandinavia, South America, South Africa
and the United Kingdom.
"Touch" is the latest Asian feature to be added to Miramax's
ever-growing film library of Asian pics, said to number about 100.
Recently acquired titles by Miramax include "Tears of the Black
Tiger," "The Legend of Zu" and three films by Hong
Kong action star/director Stephen Chiau, including "Shaolin
Soccer."
