KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) -- Michelle Yeoh, the star of Oscar-winning ''Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,'' was awarded an honorary title in her native Malaysia Thursday.

The 38-year-old actress has become a Datuk, a title similar to knight which is the second-highest that can be conferred by anyone other than Malaysia's king. The honorific came from Sultan Azlan Shah, ruler of northern Perak state where Yeoh was born.

Yeoh, who traveled from China to Perak to accept the title, said she was excited and honored.

''This award is an acknowledgment for my achievement and my career and it will encourage me to strive further in the future,'' Yeoh was quoted as saying by the national news agency, Bernama.

Yeoh said her father, also a Datuk, told her about the award a week ago and asked her to return to Malaysia to receive it personally.

''My father was lucky to get me on the phone as I was about to leave for a desert location, Sian, and there is no communication once I am in the desert,'' she said. ''I had to rush from Sian and take a flight from Shanghai to Hong Kong before landing in Kuala Lumpur.''
