Crouching Tiger' Star Michelle Yeoh Has 'The Touch' for Live-Action 'Mulan' December 10, 2001 HOLLYWOOD (Zap2it.com) - Michelle Yeoh ("Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon") will star in "Hua Mulan," which the Oscar®-winning cinematographer Peter Pau (also "Crouching Tiger") will make his second directorial effort, according to Screen Daily. Yeoh is producing both projects via her newly established multimedia company Han Entertainment. "Hua Mulan" is based on the same legendary Chinese female warrior as Disney's 1998 animated feature "Mulan." Yeoh's Han partner Thomas Chung described the project as "'Braveheart' meets 'Ran.'" Wang Hui-Ling (another "Crouching Tiger" veteran) is writing the "Hua Mulan" script. The picture is in advanced development and is expected to cost over $25 million to make. Locations will be scouted after Han completes its first project "The Touch," which stars Yeoh and marks Pau's directorial debut. "The Touch," an $18.5 million production, is a romantic action adventure about a gang of criminals working undercover in a circus in China with Yeoh playing a trapeze artist. Coming off of several weeks of exteriors and location work, Yeoh and company move to studios in Beijing to finish the movie. During "The Touch" shoot, Yeoh sustained an injury, a bruise close to her left eye. Fortunately, there will be no scar, and she returned to work soon after with the injury covered by her hair. "We are on course to wrap the picture on Jan. 15 as scheduled," Yeoh told Screen International. "We did so much pre-production that we have been extremely organized and the shoot so far has been very good." On Han's plans for the future, Chung said, "Everything we do from now on is capable of having a Chinese dimension. There is a great pool of talent in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan which has the potential to become the Michelle Yeoh, Jet Li and Chow Yun-Fats of tomorrow." One such talent is expected to be actor Brandon Chang, who plays Yeoh's younger brother in "The Touch." Han has a one-year first-look deal with Miramax, which will distribute "The Touch" stateside. The company also has a "'Scream'-like" horror flick brewing that may be made in English or a blending of languages. "The Touch" is aiming to hit theaters next summer." |
