Addressing A Crowd With Confidence...
EGL is SUCH a master of public speaking that we felt it imperative to offer a class in the art of addressing a crowd successfully. Pay attention. There will be a quiz at the end.
Tips On Talking To A Group of Strangers:
Rule #1: Never start off with a lame joke. You will get one of two equally bad responses (if you're lucky): dead silent accompanied by icy stares, or a riot of Jerry Springer magnitude.
Rule #2: Know what you're talking about. If you give a speech at a Masonic temple, please don't talk about their tools and stones. You may be offered as a ritual sacrifice.
Rule #3: Know when to quit and when to proceed. If more than half the audience boos a proposal or idea, skip it and move on to something else. Or pick a different tactic. Hum and tap dance if needs be. Or if it seems appropriate, strip down to your birthday suit. Anything to please the crowd.
Rule #4: If all else fails, pretend everyone is sitting around in chicken suits. Oh wait, that'd probably make you laugh uncontrollably...And some people don't appreciate that very much...So, strike that...I guess...em...just run really fast in the direction you arrived in. Sooner or later, you'll meet a door from which you can escape.

Question: Have you anything special planned for such a small environment tonight? Edge: Try not to bump into each other. Try to play on time. Try to remember what song we're playing. That's all for now. Thank you and good evening.*
*note: the unitalicised portion of the above was not part of the original conversation. The question and answer were taken from the Edge's 10-10-01 live webchat from the Notre Dam pre-show.
