The Valley of Fire is a magnificent State Park, located some 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. It is the oldest state park in Nevada, and is host to many forms of wildlife, as well as beautiful, vividly colored sandstone formations. The park was formed some 150 million years ago, from great dinosaur-era sand dunes. These dunes, through time, formed into sandstone and were shaped over millennia into the intricate shapes and structures that make up the valley today. |

The valley was first inhabited by prehistoric man, who left his own imprint upon the land. Over a span approximately dating from 300 B.C. to 1150 A.D., this was the home of first, the Basket Maker people, and later the Anasazi. Their visits to the twisting canyons probably involved hunting, food gathering and religious ceremonies. They left behind intriguing examples of rock art (petroglyphs) at several locations about the Valley. |
| The valley is home to many species of plants and animals. Some plants you are likely to find are: creosote, brittle bush, and burro brush. As well as several types of cactus, including beavertail and cholla. In the springtime, look for beautiful displays of indigo, desert mallow, and desert marigold. Spring really is the best time to visit, while the flowers are blooming and the days are still mild (desert temps. reach the 120's F in the summer!!). But, be aware of thunderstorms, the valley is prone to flashfloods. Remember, you are in the desert! | ![]() |

Bird watchers look for raven, sage sparrow, house finches, and if you are very lucky, even the adorable roadrunner! *Beep*Beep* Most of the desert dwellers are nocturnal, but you might be lucky enough see: coyote, kit fox, rattlesnake, gopher snake, king snake, spotted skunk, black tailed jackrabbit, assorted lizards, gila monsters, ...did I mention snakes?...and (especially at the picnic areas) antelope ground squirrels. If the luck is smiling upon you, you just may happen upon the rare desert tortoise. If you are this fortunate one, please, please remember that this cute little fella' is protected by state law. Don't pick him up, or in any way harass or harm him. He can't fight or run away, and you never know, but he might have some awful big relatives somewhere in the universe.... ;-D |
Picnic Grounds, Camping and Hiking Facilities are available. But remember, you are going into the DESERT. Take plenty of water, dress in long sleeves and pants, ( I know it's hot, but trust me) and wear appropriate shoes. We lose too many people to the desert gods, be prepared, be informed, and please listen to the nice park ranger...
