This is an old page, but I still receive e-mails about the campground, so I am leaving it up. At least for now.

KOA Kampground Near Savannah, Georgia

[RV Picture]On the evening of 18 October 1997, we camped in this KOA Kampground near Savannah, Georgia. The grounds are located just off Interstate-95. We stopped for the night.

The lady behind the desk was more helpful than most. She informed us that two other RVs' in the park were also from Merritt Island, Florida. I had a very enjoyable conversation with one of the Merritt Island couples.

This campground was all we expected. We do suggest it for over-night. Longer stays should be fun if you like the pond oriented activities that are available. The facilities, services and employees were good.

[Can-goose]

The goose in this photo is one of a few Canadian geese that were quietly paddling about in the early morning mist. The Canadian Goose is a proud bird and is also a strong family creature. A Canadian male will stand guard while the rest of the family eats. When members of the family have eaten the female and the male will swap places and the female will stand guard while the male eats. Perhaps these are the Victorians of the animal world.

[Swan]

This swan is preening its self in preparation to start the day. This is a Mute Swan and it has no voice. Mute swans are common place in North America. We have observed them from Connecticut to Florida and in California. They are colored both all white and all black. If there are other colors we have not seen them.

A Mute Swan paddling about displaying the dignity that swans are so famous for.

[Mallards]

Two Mallards enjoying the water. As you may know, Mallards are ever present along the east coast of America. The male and female look very difference from each other. The male is brightly colored and the female is a brown color. Because of her color she can hide with her eggs or ducklings. We call the duckings "inkdots" because of their markings.

[African goose]

This creature is an African goose. The Africans are not a common sight, but are not so uncommon as to be remarkable at their appearance. Africans are known for their call - IT IS LOUD. They have a resonant chamber on their forehead that greatly increases the power of their voice. This bird is a male and is ready to mate. The wing feather sticking out sideways is a visual clue. There will be a feather sticking out on both sides when he is ready to mate.

All the pictures in this group lack color. This was caused by a lack of light when the pictures were taken. It was early morning with low clouds, light fog and a fine mist was falling. The birds do not mind the weather, but the camera does.

There were people fishing in the pond, but I did not see any catches. It seemed that most of the fisher-folks were staying in the cabins and not the RVs. There was a goodly supply of children running around.

The Cabins
[Cabin] The cabins were very popular in this campground. I believe the cabins were at 100 per cent occupancy. It looks as if the campground owner believes the future is in cabins, because a subdivision of them is being built along the far shore of the pond. We were told that cabins should be reserved well ahead of time.
