Frank and Betty
in the Civil Air Patrol
We purchased a used Cessna 172B in 1967 and soon after
joined the CAP. After working with the Cadet program for a
couple of years Betty ended her active participation. Frank
moved from the Cadet program to the Senior side of CAP and
continued, off and on, for about 22 more years.
We kept and used the Cessna for 5 years, but
that is another story for another day. |
Betty was in
and out of the CAP several times over the years. She was not
interested in Emergency Services and did not work in that
area. That seemed unusual to me, because most people I knew
were primarily interested in ES. Her highest title was Group
V, Plans And Programs Officer, Virginia Wing.
I left CAP for a short time many years ago, but
after returning I remained an active member for over 20 years.
A few years ago the press of work and overwhelming overtime
made active CAP
membership a hopeless situation, so CAP was abandoned. During
the many years of participation in the administrative side of
CAP the following titles were held; Squadron Commander Florida
Wing (Central Brevard Squadron), Squadron Commander New
Hampshire Wing (Sea Coast Squadron), Group Commander in
Virginia Wing (Group V) and Aircraft Maintenance Officer New
Hampshire Wing. The remaining time was served as someone's
Administrative or Personnel Officer. In support of the ES
mission the following titles were held; Communicator, Mission
Pilot, Mission Observer, Aeronautical Radiological Monitor,
State Mission Coordinator and several other titles. |
The
most important thing of value I gained during my time in CAP
was the opportunity to work with many wonderful people. Some
of them became personal friends. This makes all the
contributions, work and worry over the years, worth it.
The aircraft to the left is an L16 manufactured
by Aeronca for use as a Forward Air Controller platform in the
Korean war. Most of the aircraft of this type were given to
the ROK Air Force after the war ended. This aircraft found its
way back to the states.
The aircraft in the picture is flying over
Cocoa Beach in about 1975. The front-seater is John Wilson and
the back-seater is Joe Tracy. Both were living on Merritt
Island at the time this picture was taken. At the time this
picture was taken the aircraft was owned by the Civil Air
Patrol. |
The
aircraft in the picture to the left is a Champion Aircraft
7ECA. I am standing by the aircraft and the 1962 AMC Rambler
Classic in the background was mine. The picture was taken
about 1968.At the time this picture
was taken the aircraft was owned by the Civil Air Patrol. The
L16, 7AC, and 7ECA are all from the same design. |

Remember the Pluto Card?
I was looking through some papers amongst the scatter
around here and found this card. It was issued back in the 1960's.
There are some other items hiding in the garage sale candidates
stored around here, as I find them I will add them to this page.
Perhaps this will become a history page - then again, maybe not.
During the 1930s through the 1950s
cartoons were often used in logos and insignia of the US military.
CAP also used many cartoon characters during those early days. If
you look in one of the old CAP Handbooks from that period you will
find most illustrations include a cartoon character or two. Today
all emblems and illustrations are all so very professional looking.
If you have some old CAP stuff
e-mail me and I will include it on this page. |
