It's A Girl!
Lucky us, our first baby was a girl! She is so adorable. Here are some pictures that we took during the process. I have to warn you, it was a messy process, so if you have a weak stomach take care.
Until we walked out and saw half the foal hanging out of her! After a mad rush, everybody was able to get into position. Look at Steve, he is making sure the mother isn't having any trouble having the baby. The foal is doing just fine, until...
Every 20 minutes we had to go check on the horses to make sure nothing was going on...When examining this horse we thought nothing of it...
Congratulations!!!! It's a baby girl and doing well. The birth was quick and easy.
Mom decided she was not happy about the situation. After finally settling down on the other side of the pen next to the fence, she got back to business having her baby...
The mother isn't done yet...she still has to pass the placenta. If it takes too long, the vet needs to come and flush her. Luckily, it only took her around 15 minutes to fully pass it.
The baby is safe and sound in the stall. The mother and baby will be spending the night here to make sure they do well.
Lastly, weighing the placenta and double checking to see if it is all intact, healthy and of adequate size. Any missing parts would probably be in mom, meaning that she'd have to see the vet. Also, a bad looking placenta could mean that the baby might not have developed well. This one, however, is in excellent condition.
