Down Time!
It wasn't all fun and games for us. Most of the time, Christi and I were "studying", watching movies, making midnight phone calls or doing crosswords. We eventually became so bored that we transformed checking up on the mares into a silly event. Once we figured out that we fit between the planks of the fences, we just climbed through instead of opening the gates. Several times I almost got stuck, and the danger of getting splinters in an inconvenient place was very high. However, that didn't stop us. It was much easier that trying to open the cold and wet latches of the gates.
The first time we did this was the worst. We had forgotten to bring food and by one we were famished. After that, I made a special run to the store the night we were watching. Nothing beats RedBull and Chex on a long night.

Look! Even the cat got bored after a while!!!
The days when a mare wasn't foaling could just get boring. It is hard to stay up if you don't bring anything to do for the night. I would try to study organic chemistry, but then would have to stop because it would put me to sleep. One night, I actually brought my laptop so Anik and I could watch a movie and pass some time; it took us 6 hours to watch Bad Boys II. We had to keep on pausing the movie to go and check on the mares which got old after a while. Every time the movie got into a good part we didn't want to leave, we just wanted to watch the movie. That kind of attitude almost cost us a foaling. One of the times we paused it and walked outside, one mare was foaling and we almost said "Don't worry; no one is going to go". When we didn't want to just sit there and pass time, we would walk around the farm and look at all the horses, taking pictures or video taping. We would do just about everything  to keep ourselves up, like playing the old connect the dots to make squares game.

Maybe we can get a chance to get a power nap squeezed in between checking in on the mares!
Are we done yet? Can we go back in the nice cozy room now?
The is one of the little games we played when we got bored. Connect dots to make lines and form boxes. Whoever makes the most boxes wins!! Anik and I ended up tieing this game!
Looks like the cat already beat us to the napping part. "Bright light, bright light!" But believe me, he will be up in a few minutes to check on the mares with us!
