Springtails are tiny, tasty arthropods. Although springtails are typically restricted to our Children's Menu, our Chef will occasionally prepare them for full grown residents who are of a petite size.
This picture illustrates just how small springtails are. Inside the yellow circle you will see three of them.
The deal with springtails: Unlike fruitflies, keeping our kitchen supplied with springtails requires almost no work whatsoever. The Chef just adds a couple of flakes of fishfood to the medium once a month or so and leaves them alone.
Our Chef typically collects and serves springtails in the following manner: Step 1. He pours a cup of water into the springtail medium. This causes the springtails to float to the top, and cluster on the surface. Step 2. After a minute or so, he uses a turkey baster to extract the water he just added. This liquid now contains the original water, as well as the floating springtails. He calls this liquid a "Springtail Cocktail".
Step 3. The Chef squirts the springtail cocktail onto the moss in the vivarium. Because the springtails are so small, he usually squirts them right in front of the Guests. Otherwise, the Guests probably wouldn't notice them.
