Without a 'Bang'
The box office was once again crowded with big stars and big movies, but it was not ruled by the 'bang, bang, shoot em up' movies of the Summer.  Instead this week's openers were topped by the comedy 'The Banger Sisters'.   by Mark Whipkey
This week's numbers were no milestone for the actors who starred in the movies that cashed in, although this was the week that the Summer movies finally fell off the charts.  It was only expected since four other movies opened this past week.  Yet they just as in the past few weeks, or September for that matter, did not pack much of a punch.  Movie goers were not impressed by the return of Goldie and Susan Sarandon this week as their movie The Banger Sisters opened with only $10.3 million. Although these ladies are not known for their huge hits at the box office but for their bold attitudes and their female power.  That is what makes them a hit on video and becoming female role models.  Susan Sarandon stays away from much overbudgeted productions starring in more personal roles such as this year's Igby Goes Down and Moonlight Mile, and in Anywhere But Here.  She hasn't had a huge box office hit since 1998's Stepmom, which made $91 million.  Goldie on the other hand has strived for box office success and really has been lacking, with flops The Out of Towners, Town and Country, and Everyone Says I Love You.  She hasn't had a hit since The First Wives' Club which made $105 million back in 1996.  Yet both stars really have

established themselves as top notch actresses with Goldie Hawn being a one time Academy Award Winner for her role in 1969's Cactus Flower and Susan Sarandon is a three time Academy Award Nominee and surprisingly only a one time Academy Award Winner her self, for her role in 1995's Dead Man Walking.  So despite box office draw both actresses can catch attention for their performances.  Here's to anticipation of more credibility to come for these two stars.  Unfortunately, The Banger Sisters will not get them that recognition.

Number one for a second week in a row despite four movies opening this week was
Barbershop, with an impressive second week scoring another $13.3 million, totaling $38.8 million for the $15 million bugdet movie.  In second was not the Greek Wedding, unfortunately, but instead was The Banger Sisters with an opening of $10.3 million.  In third Was, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, still holding strong with another $10 million, now totaling a whopping $124.3 million.  In fourth, was this week's second opener Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever with $7.1 million, for a poor performance.  And rounding out the top five was The Four Feathers opening with a very epically dissappointing $7.1 million as well.  And not even coming in the top five was the last opener of the week, Trapped coming in at number ten with $3.2 million.  Might I add that these movies
were not cheap to make with The Banger Sisters costing a total of $30 million, including marketing costs, Ballistic costing $70 million alone with another $20 million on marketing.  With these big losses studios may want to rethink their decision making processes.

Well next week, looks like another exciting week at the movie theaters.  I hate to be sarcastic or even talk badly of the movies, but we are really being subjected to crap.  This month starting with a wimper and will finish with a squeek.   This week
The Tuxedo starring Jackie Chan and Jennifer Love Hewitt, about a secret tuxedo that comes equipped with kung fu fighting techniques.  You put the suit on and you, too can fight like Jackie Chan.  Can you say Bomb!?  Also this week is Sweet Home Alabama, which is most likely going to be number one next week, about a woman, Reese Witherspoon, who is about to get married to a rich and powerful Mr. Right, but later finds out that she never got a divorce from poor and powerless, Mr. Wrong.  Um Ok!  Well maybe the return of Hannibal will bring better things to come for October.
