The 'Sum' of All Grosses
"The Sum of All Fears" opened with $31.2 million.  This was good news for Ben Affleck, but bad news for George Lucas.    by Mark Whipkey
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones could not stop "The Sum of All Fears" from taking over the top spot this week.  This means a much faster descent down the box office ladder for the "Clones".

So how well did Ben Affleck really do as Jack Ryan, lets find out.  In March of 1990, Alec Baldwin's Jack Ryan of
The Hunt for Red October opened with $17.2 million.  Harrison Ford's turn as Ryan in June of 1992 scored $18.5 million with Patriot Games and $20.3 million in August of 1994, with Clear and Present
Ben Affleck won the battle of the 'Ryans' as 'The Sum of All Fears"
passed by the 'Clones' and 'Spider-Man' for the top spot this week.
Danger.  So with those numbers in mind and the gross of "The Sum of All Fears", Affleck has won one battle, that of best opening, but his own box office war of highest grossing Tom Clancy movie adaptation, and quite possibly most liked Jack Ryan of the series, has just begun.

So down came Ben Affleck, and washed the "Clones" and the "Spider" out.
The Sum of All Fears took in a reasonable $31.2 million as it opened at number one at the box office this week.  Falling by more than 50 percent from last week, is Star Wars:Episode II with a dissapointing $20.6 million, bringing it to a total of $232 million.  With this big of a drop so soon , the "Clones" may end up being the lowest grossing "Star Wars" movie of the series.  In third this week, was the not so dissappointing "Spider-Man" with another $14.5 million, totaling $354 million. Undercover Brother managed to open fairly strong with $12 million for fourth.  This was better than his opening for his last movie The New Guy, which opened with $9 million.  Rounding out the top five this week was the surprising Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron with another $10.7 million, totaling $38.2 million this week.

No one movie should hold the top spot, for more than one week, from now until July 2, which is when
Men in Black 2 comes out.  Expect Bad Company to knock off Ben Affleck from the top spot next week.  It is actually anybody's game from this point on.  With the competition as fierce as it is, there is no telling what the rest of the summer holds.  Along with Chris Rock and Anthony Hopkins' in Bad Company, a Jerry Bruckheimer production, the only other opener this week is the Sandra Bullock comedy, The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, which should do fairly well given the movie's good buzz lately.  But who will still stand tall next week out of the "Clones" and "Spider-Man", as both are beginning to show signs of aging.

In the all time box office news, the "Clones" and "Spider-Man" make headlines again.  The "Clones" beat
The Lost World: Jurassic Park's $229 million to become the 28th highest grossing movie of all time.  "Spider-Man" will set his mark this coming week, by beating the first Jurassic Park's $357 million and becoming the 5th highest grossing movie of all time.  "Spider-Man will probably not reach the fourth spot held by Star Wars Episode I, because that would mean that the "Spider" would have to gross another $80 million.  It is not impossible, but highly unlikely for a movie that has passed its peak.
