The Green 'Mile'
'8 Mile' had other movies, bigger movies, green with envy because it gave the equation Eminem plus first movie role equals green, for money, this weekend.  With a spectacular $54.4 million opening, all of Eminem's critics have been hushed.  by Mark Whipkey
Having conquered the music industry, it was only a given his first starring role would be a huge success.  I myself read many articles on why Eminem's movie made so much money this weekend.  My answer is why could you not see it coming.  The man has sold 7 million copies of his Eminem Show to date and he has turned out to be a cultural phenomenom, everything he touches turns to gold.  This is not to say Eminem is a saint, but hey when you are this "hot', you have to run with it and milk the success for every penny.  I must quote one of my favorite band's songs by saying "a hit single don't last very long" from Cypress Hill's Rock Superstar.  Eminem is a star and maybe now he will be treated as such.  He is the man we would all love to hate, but are so fascinated by his quick, raw and in your face personality that we choose to keep buying his records and now going to see his movie.  I believe we will see many great things to come for Eminem, because when his music stardom starts to fizzle he can now fall back on an acting career.  But that my friends will be a
Eminem stood tall knowing that most shelled out ten bucks
to see his movie this weekend, even after they payed twenty for his CD
long time to come before we see his superstardom fade.  Eminem is here to stay, whether we like it or not.

So Eminem was number one as expected with
8 Mile bringing in $54.4 million.  Second was The Santa Clause 2 with another impressive week, finishing the week with $24.8 million and totaling $60.1 million.  Look for this movie to pick up big numbers around Christmas being that this is the only true Christmas story this holiday season.  Third was The Ring with a great fourth week with $16 million finishing the week with $86.1 million.  Looks like we'll have Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas all in one month.  Fourth was the underperformed I Spy, with $9 million and finishing with $24.6 million.  Well if anything that Eminem touches turns to gold than it is safe to say that anything Eddie touches turns to crap.  And Rounding out the top five was Jackass: The Movie with $7.2 million with a surprising total of $53.3 million.  I still can't get over the hype about people hurting themselves for fun.  Gosh I sound like an old geezer.  Finally to give my weekly, Big Fat Greek Wedding update, the movie is becoming the Titanic of the independent movies.  My Big Fat Greek Wedding is the only other movie that has lasted as long as Titanic.  Titanic ran from December of 1997 till September of 1998 totaling over $600 million, a feat that will hold strong for many years or should i say until  the cost of movie tickets goes up again.
Anyway My Big Fat Greek Wedding is still staying strong for the 30th week of its release, coming in at #6 this week with $5.7 million and totaling $192.7 million.  A total that has the movie at number five for the highest grossing movies of the year right behind Austin Powers in Goldmember and Signs, beating out Summer favorites like XXX, Minority Report and Men in Black 2.  The movie now stands at number forty-seven of all time beating out Toy Story this week.  Wow.

What's next?  How bout the return of Harry Potter.  It's been a year since the first one already.
Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets comes out this week, along with Steven Seagal and Ja Rule in Half Past Dead.  Has it really been ten years since Steven Seagal first appeared on the screen?  No.... It's been fourteen and he hasn't had a hit since.  So with those two movies coming out this weekend, you be the judge, who do you think will come out on top?  A man who hasn't had a hit since he had a ponytail and could still lift his leg above his belly or a boy who last time out opened with $90 million and went on to be the top movie of 2001, my money is on "Herie Putter". I was going for the English accent. Oh whatever.
