| There was much hype and little disappointment this weekend as the X-Men returned, bringing the Summer Movie Season into full swing. The sequel far exceeded its predeccessor. The original opened with $54.4 million back in 2000, bringing an introduction in the age old comic book series. The film went onto gross a total of $157 million domestically, thus proving that more than just adolescent males were interested in the powers of the superhuman mutants. So the first was the introduction. The second is a return that needed no introduction, picking up right where the last movie left off. With this new movie comes new exciting action that was lacking in the first one. This is the right time for the X-Men's revolt against their oppression because we are all interested in a few good superheroes, judging from the success of Spider-Man and the much hyped Hulk, slated for June 20th release. So be prepared because superheroes are in demand. Oh and did I mention that Wolverine and Co.'s second outing had the fourth biggest opening ever behind ummmmm... that other super hero Spider-Man and the two Harry Potter movies. |

| So if you were looking forward to Lizzy Mcguire to take over the box office this weekend... sorry to disappoint you. If you haven't heard or did not bother to read the rest of my article, X-Men 2 was top with an unbeatable $85.5 million in its opening weekend, almost $20 million more than the original. I guess that's the price of inflation. In second was Lizzy herself in The Lizzy Mcguire Movie opening with a surprising $17.3 million. Third was the suspense movie getting good reviews from critics and moviegoers, Identity, with another $9.4 million totaling $30.1 million thus far. Very good considering the hard sell of a suspense/ horror movie these days. Fourth was Anger Management with another $8.4 million finishing the week with $115.2 million, which still puts it $7 million behind the highest grossing movie of the year so far, Bringing Down the House. And rounding out the top five was Holes with $6.9 million bringing its total to an impressive $45.3 million. So the week moves on as the Summer Season has approached us once again. Action movies, over budget, overacting, no acting, no script, too many movies to see and too little time to see them. And once again lets throw in another Eddie Murphy flop. Because that is what we will get for this coming week. Daddy Day Care is the only opener, in wide release this week, and it is the only thing worth not seeing. I expect the mutants will rule once more before the big release of The Matrix Reloaded. So don't expect Eddie to pull out of his career slump anytime soon, at least not with his new movie this week. |
