'Sugar' Coated
Although it is not much to cheer about, 'Brown Sugar' opened above the other five openers. The movie managed to bring in just a little over $10 million this weekend. by Mark Whipkey
With a top notch cast of the African American community's up and comers, Brown Sugar still managed to fall short this weekend. Considering the business that this week's other openers did, it may not be that short. So maybe we see the rush of movie studios trying to get their little movies-that-can out before the big budget movies of the Thanksgiving and Christmas Seasons. Instead of profit, industries are turning their movies into the ones that could have been. This week just put up too many choices for movie goers. So instead, audiences went to the familiar, adding more gain for Red Dragon and Sweet Home Alabama and leaving no room, or chance, for the new movies of this week. So this week went as these. Red Dragon remained at number one this week with another impressive $17.6 million now totaling $63.2 million. Second was Sweet Home Alabama, again, with another $14.2 million finishing the week with $84.7 million. This movie looks to be Reese Witherspoon's highest grossing movie. In third was the best opener of the week, Brown Sugar with a start of $10.7 million. A mere gain, but just enough to gain control over the weeks other openers. Fourth was another opener, The Transporter, which should have stuck with its previous opening of September 13th because it would have had less competition. Instead it opens with five other movies and
opens to $9.1 million. Rounding out the top five, is............. My Big Fat Greek Wedding with a surprising $200,000 more than last with another $8.4 million this week. The 'Wedding' party has received $158.9 million in gifts thus far. The week's other openers came in #7 White Oleander($5.6 million), #8 Tuck Everlasting($5.2 million), #9 Knockaround Guys($5.0 million) and #12 The Rules of Attraction($2.5 million), making for poor business. What comes next week? Lies, Horror and Deceit. What ever happened to a family friendly film? All kidding aside. The Ring should scare some game this week, as its tagline says "The Scariest Movie Since 'The Sixth Sense'". That might be the push this movie will need to topple Hannibal this week. Also we have Abandon with Katie Holmes and Benjamin Bratt. Plus the return of the mac, Samuel L. Jackson in Formula 51. A movie that has been floating around for quite awhile looking for a release date and name. The movie was originally supposed to open in May under the title of The 51st State. So expect one of the two horror movies to finish number one this week. Whether The Ring can be that one we will have to wait and see.
Taye Diggs and Sanaa Latham have little to smile about as they led the pack of this week's losers at the box office.
