The 'Spider' King Episode II
"Spider-Man" earns a record $223 million in its second week.  Spidey looks to surpass $250 million by the time the "Clones" hits theaters on Thursday.  by Mark Whipkey
Spider-Man has set standards no one could have ever dreamed.  Last week, it surprised us all by becoming the fastest movie ever to gross over $100 million.  "Spider-Man" did it in 3 days, with an opening of $114 million.

As for its second week, it grossed another $72 milllion, which is even more than I guessed its opening weekend to be.  With these numbers "Spider-Man" has broken another record this weekend by becoming the fastest movie ever to pass go and collect $200 million.  It beat
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace's old record of fourteen days, by five days.  This week's tallies brings "Spider-Man" to a nine day total of $223 million, making it the highest grossing movie of the year, thus far, beating Ice Age's $170 million.  This total also makes "Spider-Man" the 29th highest grossing movie of all-time and climbing.
"Spider-Man" has another record breaking weekend, standing high above the rest.
Despite the box office receipts of "Spider-Man", the other did make some money.  Like this weeks new arrivals, Unfaithful and The New Guy.  "Unfaithful" a Richard Gere/Diane Lane story of betrayal and infidelity, finished exceptionally well with $14 million, coming in second behind everyone's new favorite superhero.  In third, despite bad reviews and cheap laughs, was "The New Guy" starring Eddie Griffin, with $9.5 million.  And rounding out the top five were The Scorpion KIng and Changing Lanes.  "The Scorpion King" brought in another $4 million this weekend, gringing its total to $80 million.  I expect it to just make $100 million.  "Changing Lanes" raked in $3.5 million for the weekend, bringing its total to $56 million.

Don't expect "Spider_Man" to be on top next weekend.  With a four-day weekend at the box office,
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones will have the jump on the competition, About a Boy and The Salton Sea with Val Kilmer.  Plus with a three week old "Spider" the "Clones" should have no problem having a successful "Attack" on the box office.  Although if "Spider-Man" spins his web a third time, George Lucas may no longer be able to excite us with just a spectacle of computer graphics and other world characters.  He may need to hire a certain Tobey McGuire, who is also strong in "the force" lately, Star Wars Episode III, to play a Jedi kinight who can walk up walls and who has spider-like abilities. Hey anything is possible if Lucas has become so commercialized that he would cast Nsync in a "Star Wars" movie, he might also want to cash in on the "Spider-Man" craze.

As for the notion that the "Clones" can outdue "Spider-Man"s box office mayhem.  I think not.  "Star Wars" will open big but not that big.  Although I would like to eat my words because it would be exciting to see a box office showdown. Stay tuned until next weekend.
