| this third movie from the crowd pleasing director is already on its way to becoming a hit. At this point 'Signs' is expected to surpass the $200 million mark and within a short period of time. This movie brings to reality many fears of the human race. Is there other life forms out there? Are they hostile? Mr. Shyalaman says there is and that they do wish us harm. No more nice, friendly E.T., hello destructive and dominating alien of Independence Day. Well the receipts went as these. Signs scored number one with a huge opening take of $60.1 million. In second this week was Austin Powers in Goldmember, with another excellent weekend with another $31.1 million for a total of $141.6 million in its second week. This movie is already on par to beat the second movie's final total of $206 million by besting its second week's total of $116.1 million. The second opener of the three this week was The Master of Disguise, which came in third opening to $12.5 million. In fourth was Martin Lawrence Live in Runteldat opening to $7.3 million. And rounding out the top five this week was Road to Perdition with a slight drop from last week with $6.6 million totaling $77.1 million showing that it has staying power. What's in store for next week. Three more movies open this week. First is next week's number one movie, XXX, starring Vin Diesel as the James Bond of the new millenium. Also in theaters is the Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams, which should give Vin Diesel some competition as family movies have certainly made a comeback this summer. Finally Blood Work starring and directed by Clint Eastwood as retired detective who gets called by a killer to come back into duty. |
