| Tom Hanks has come along way from those days as a Bosom Buddy. He has now established himself with star power. That is exactly what he brings to every movie he is in these days. Whether he is stranded on a deserted island in Cast Away($233 million) or a cowboy in Toy Story ($191 million) and Toy Story 2 ($245 mllion), people are flocking to see this guy. Its been over ten years now since Tom Hanks was doing comedies that people passed up at the theater, The Burbs' and Joe vs.the Volcano, thus who | |||||||||||||||

| would have ever thought he would be so big today. Everything he touches turns to gold. Not to put too much pressure on you there Tom, but every movie he has done for the last ten years has made over $100 million, actually his movies now average about $200 million, with exception of That Thing You Do ($25.7 million) and Philadelphia ($77.4 million). So with an Academy Award under his belt and huge box office draw, what's next for the man of gold, maybe another Oscar. That's what many are thinking with his performance in his new movie. With all the talk of Road to Perdition, it did not make number one this week. That crown once again goes to Men in Black 2, with $25 million for another big weekend totaling $133.3 million, about half of Men in Black 1's total. This weekend's take makes this movie the seventh movie to cross $100 million this summer. In second this week is Road to Perdition, with a surprising opening of $22.1 million for Tom Hanks' first mobster movie. Also worth noting is that this movie beat out the competition for second place and almost grossed as much as Men in Black, with a thousand less theaters than this week's other openers and a whopping two thousand less theaters than Men in Black. That is why this movie is this week's focus and clearly the true winner at the box office. In third this week was another stiff competitor opening this weekend. Reign of Fire scored $16 million this weekend. In fourth this week another opener, Halloween Resurrection, with a modest $12.3 million. Last time we saw Michael Myers was in 1998's Halloween H20 which opened to $16.1 million and finished with $55 million. Rounding out the top five this week was Mr. Deeds with another good weekend with $11 million, finishing with $94.1 million. Finally in sad news this week, the last opener this week performed under expectations despite much hype and advertisement. The Crocodile Hunter opened at number six for the week, soon to be swallowed up by the competition, with a meager $10 million. Guess we won't be seeing The Crocodile Hunter in Los Angeles. It really was a collision course this week for the hunter, a colision course right into the ground. What could possibly be in store for next week. Well Tom Hanks adds more theaters to his 'Road' trip and we have three more movies opening. This week Harrison Ford returns in role we have never seen him play in K19 The Widowmaker, as the commander of the Russian sub the K19. I expect this movie to be number one next week, but anything is possible. Also opening, is Eight Legged Freaks and Stuart Little 2. Both movies should not make much of an impact this week. If they do don't expect them to last for very long. So we hit the half way mark for the summer movie season, but the heat is still on. With Austin Powers in Goldmember, Signs, XXX, Spy Kids 2 and Clint Eastwood's Blood Work, the summer still has much life to it. |
