| Number One 'Santa' | |||||||||||||||||||||||
| 'The Santa Clause 2' pulled in big numbers this weekend as it opened with $29 million. This was a big start for moviegoers of this holiday movie season. by Mark Whipkey | |||||||||||||||||||||||
| Tim Allen brought us Christmas in November once again. He also brought us another hit. 'The Santa Clause 2' scored big this weekend, grossing $10 million more on its opening week then its predecessor did. The original 'Santa Clause' scored a $19 million opening and finished with $144.8 million. This second movie looks to surpass the original but still it has a long way to go. Tim Allen especially needed a hit after his last two movies, Joe Somebody and Big Trouble, flopped at the box office and video rentals. The stakes are especially high this holiday season as Santa kicks it off, but we still have many more movies to come. We still have Eminem in 8 Mile, Harry Potter 2, James Bond 20 called Die Another Day, Analyze That, The Two Towers, Star Trek: Nemesis, Catch Me If You Can, and The Gangs of New York, that should have no problem nocking the jingle out of Santa's groove. |

| Well The Santa Clause 2 was number one this week with a $29 million opening. Number two was the very spooky The Ring with another great third week with $18.5 million finishing with $64.9 million. This was definitely one of the scariest movies I have seen it a long while. Third was I Spy, which looks to be another flop from Eddie Murphy, his third for the year. It opened with a weak $14 million. Fourth was last week's number one, Jackass, with $13.1 million this week, finishing with $42.4 million. Its hard to believe a movie about people hurting themselves for fun would do so well. Rounding out the top five this week was Ghost Ship. It came out with $6.5 for the week and $21.2 overall. It is definitely worth noting that My Big Fat Greek Wedding pulled in another $5.6 million for sixth place, now totaling $185.2 million on a $5 million budget. I am rooting for a $200 million finish and beyond for this little movie who has been racking up the dough since April 19. As for next week, well Mr. Marshall Mathers is in town. Yes Eminem is opening his 8 Mile, pretty much by himself. The week's only other opener, Femme Fatale with Antonio Banderas and Rebecca Rohmin - Stamos, comes out on Wednesday to get a head start on the competition. It looks like Eminem will be crowned king of the box office next week and possibly a contender for an Oscar, or so "they" say. Stay tuned. |
