September did not go out with a wimper, instead with a bang. Reese Witherspoon appears to be on fire, as her new movie, 'Sweet Home Alabama', opened with a record setting $35.6 million. by Mark Whipkey
It was home, sweet home at the number one spot for Sweet Home Alabama this week. Despite average reviews the movie managed to have the biggest opening ever for a September release, beating out 1998 Rush Hour's $33 million. With all this being said, this makes 'Alabama' Witherspoon's biggest opening to date. Reese Witherspoon is no stranger to success. Her 2001 movie Legally Blonde, opened with $20.3 million going on to finish with $96.5 million. This is the same blonde ambition that has been winning over movie goers since 1998's Pleasantville. With Witherspoon's paycheck now raised to $15 million a movie, she has become one of the highest paid actresses in the business. Maybe now she get better roles and choices of movies to star in. Well movie goers, or should I say girls who dragged their boyfriends to go see, what they thought would be a repeat of the Witherspoon from Legally Blonde. Not quite. This was not the same character from Legally Blonde, but maybe a more mature woman who was ashamed of her hometown. Don't be disappointed ladies because Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde comes out next July.
Well Sweet Home Alabama topped the charts this week with an opening of $35.6 million. In second this week lagging far behind was Jackie Chan in The Tuxedo with an opening of $15 million, this was not bad considering it had Jennifer Love Hewitt as costar. She hasn't had a hit since 1997's I Know What You Did Last Summer which scored $76 million. On the other hand the studios could be disappointed given the recent track record of Jackie Chan, with Rush Hour 1($141 million), 2($226 million), plus Shanghai Noon with ($56 million) and a sequel on the way. In third was Barbershop with another $10 million, showing staying power with a total of $51.3 million so far. In fourth was everybody's favorite My Big Fat Greek Wedding, having repeat business from last week with another $9.4 million totaling a whopping $136.6 million. $7 million more and it will be the highest grossing independent film of all time, beating out The Blair Witch Project's $141 million. Rounding out the top five this week was The Banger Sisters with $5.4 million in their second week, totaling $18.8 million. Now that the Halloween season is here the horror movies will flock to the theaters and their hoping we will too. Along with The Silence of the Lambs prequel, Red Dragon, we have The Ring, about a chain letter that kills its readers seven days after they read
it, Below, about a crew that are assigned to search for a submarine that has been sunk for sometime. The scary thing is that what they find is not just the remains of the ship and its crew but some lost souls as well. And similar to Below is Ghost Ship, about a haunted ship that slow disappearance of its crew, one by one. Recap: Red Dragon on Oct. 4, Below on Oct. 11, The Ring on Oct. 18, and Ghost Ship on Oct. 25. Back to this week. We have Red Dragon and Jonah: Veggie Tales Movie. Need I say more. Look for Red Dragon simmer Witherspoon with some "fava beans and a nice cantee", as Hannibal takes the top spot this week with record numbers. It is most likely going to break the record for biggest October opening held by Meet the Parents with $28.6 million. I don't expect more than a peep out of the Veggie Tales Movie, which has a small audience.
