| It seems to me that the comedies are the movies that are making the money this summer. Scooby was the third movie to gross over a $100 million this summer, Lilo looks to surpass that mark as well, and now "Mr. Deeds" is on the right path too. Adam Sandler's new comedy had a better opening than Spielberg's "Minority Report", and most of the other summer movies. "Mr. Deeds" really did not have much competition this week, so maybe that helped pushed the movie to |

| a huge opening. So far the Summer movie event has been very uneventful. We have only seen four movies gross over $100 million, a mark that soon will rise fast, but this Summer season has gotten off to a slow start. Many movies have gone under expectations, like Bad Company, and a handful of others have exceeded expectations, like this week's opener "Mr. Deeds". I believe the numbers will rise over the next month and still we will have many surprises ahead. Mr. Deeds does the deed of opening in first with $37.1 million. This take more than doubles his last opening of $16 million with 2000's Little Nicky, but falls just shy of his 1999 opening of $41.5 million for Big Daddy. In second this week, is last weeks number one, Minority Report with another $21.5 million, totaling $73.4 million. This movie has performed well so far and it will have a slow climb to the top of this Summer's movie box office. Third was Lilo and Stitch with $21.5 million finishing with $77 million, right behind Tom Cruise again. Next was Scooby Doo with another impressive week bringing in $12.3 million tallying $123.9 million easily staying at number three, for the top of the Summer box office so far. Finally, The Bourne Identity rounded out the top five with $11.1 million this week finishing with $72.9 million, proving to be some competition for the other movies of the summer. Other box office news worth mentioning this week. The other opener this week Hey Arnold! The Movie opened poorly with $5.7 million putting it at number six for the week. And The Sum of All Fears becomes the fourth movie of the Summer to gross over $100 million this week as it finished the week with $105.3 million. As for next week, the Men in Black are back. I believe it will be huge week for them. But will they bring the heat like they did on the fourth of July back in 1997 when they opened to $51 milion and totaled $250 million. I think the opening will be bigger because of up in movie ticket prices but the total will fall short because this movie has too much competition the weeks to come. On Friday the 12th, the week following the "Men", Halloween: Resurrection, Reign of Fire, Road to Perdition, and The Crocodile Hunter open. Wow. It seems as if they crammed the left overs into July. That might have been the case, with Friday the 19th just as busy with K-19 The Widowmaker, Stuart Little 2 and Eight Legged Freaks, and not too mention Austin Powers right around the corner. The Summer has still got much spark left in it, but now I believe there will be too much of a challenge for these movies to make any money. |
