'fear' Not
Yet again the opening movie of the week failed to come out on top, as was seen with 'feart dot com' which opened with a mere $7.1 million.   by Mark Whipkey
As summer season winds down, so does the appeal of the recent releases coming to the multiplexes these past weeks.  Last week we saw the low numbers of three releases, S1m0ne, Serving Sara, and Undisputed.  This week once again with 'fear dot com'.

It might be because the movie is nothing more than an B-rated horror movie or that the movie has no 'real' stars.  'fear' stars Stephen Dorff, who has made himself some recognition in low profile roles in
S.F.W.  and Cecil B. Demented.  He also has had some easily forgettable roles as the lead baddy in Blade, a love interest to Susan Sarandon in Earthly Possessions and a son to Jack Nicholson in Blood and Wine.  With all this being said Dorff has not really proved his star power.  With this movie, along with his other 2002 movie Dueces Wild, being a flop, he still does not prove his worth at the box office.  Though if a movie is good, people will come.  Yet numbers are known to the public these days and when a movie has a poor opening weekend, audiences notice and stay away from a so called 'stinker' movie, as will be the case for this movie, now whether the movie is really good or bad.
Dorff and McElhone struggle to reach the top of the box office this week.
There was repeat business at the box office again this week.  Signs top the box office again this week with $16.5 million, besting its $14.2 million of last week.  This movie now has $195 million in earnings.  Second was the independent film, My Big Fat Greek Wedding,  which has slowly climbed to the top of the ladder with another $14.5 million this week, more than doubling its $7.2 million from last week.  It now stands at a total of $82.3 million.  Coming in third this week was XXX holding on with $13.1 million, falling only $100,000 thousand from last week, totaling $123.8 million.  In fourth was Spy Kids 2 staying strong with another $7.3 million this week, falling just $200,000 thousand from last week, now totaling in impressive $69 million.  And rounding out the top five for the week was the only opener, fear dot com with a very weak $7.1 million.

What could possibly be in store for next week?  More of the old favorites topping the charts?  Not if Robert Deniro can help it.  His movie
City by the Sea opens this week and it looks to bring some competition to the summer movies.  'City' opens along with Swimfan this week and the two movies look to bring some new thrills back to the cineplex.  Will the newcomers bring down the still stiff summer releases or will we see two more movies bomb at the box office? Only time will tell.
