| So "Star Wars" and "Spider-Man" take the top spots again this week, blah blah blah. This week's focus is on the entertaining, yet smart "Insomnia". by Mark Whipkey | |||||||||||||

| Insomnia is a remake of a 1998 film of the same name. I did not see the original, but I do not know how it could possibly be better. Pacino and Williams shine in this movie. Sure we have seen Pacino track down "bad guys" in the past with Heat, Serpico and Sea of Love, but this time is different. He has never had to chase Robin Williams. Williams bring a freshness to the unremorseful, psychopathic killer he portrays in his first, real dark role. With many twists and turns this movie is |

| not your typical cat and mouse thriller. Director Christopher Nolan, of Momento and Following, tricks our minds with the visions and delusions of his lead characters, in a world wiht "good guys" that aren't really good and "bad guys" that may not be so bad. Without all the hype of the "summer movie", "Insomnia" will become a hit, at the same time causing us to think about the reality of its characters. This week's top five starts with the "Clones" once again. Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones cashed in another $61 million this Memorial Day weekend bringing its total to $202 million in two weeks, making it the second fastest movie to break $200 million. In second, once again, was "Spider-Man". It broke yet another record, having the best fourth week for a movie, by taking in another $38.5 million and totaling $336.3 million in just four weeks. "Insomnia" came in third with a spectacular debut, despite its competition, bringing in $26.2 million. It was the biggest opening ever for both Al Pacino and Robin Williams. Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron came in fourth, surprisingly over Jennifer Lopez's "Enough", with $23.3 million. And rounding out the top five this week was J - Lo herself in "Enough", with $19 million. This is the last time we will see the top two spots held by the "Clones" and "Spidey", because next week Ben Affleck will be in town. The Sum of All Fears hits theaters this Friday, along with Eddie Griffin once again in Undercover Brother. Maybe he's hoping The New Guy and this release will gross as much as "Spider-Man" combined. Ben may have the box office power to untangle "Spider-Man"s five week old web, but I am not sure "Star Wars" is ready to give up the throne. The stakes will be set high once again because if "Star Wars" does not hold off the competition this coming weekend, a hard fall down the box office ladder it will be for the troubled series. With Chris Rock/Anthony Hopkins in Bad Company, Nicholas Cage in John Woo's Windtalkers, Matt Damon in The Bourne Identity, Scooby-Doo, Minority Report, and Men in Black 2; the "force" must be strong in the "Clones" to survive the summer. Shall see, we will. "Star Wars" and "Spider-Man" have been upgraded this week in the all time box office. "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones became the 39th highest grossing movie, beating last year's The Mummy Returns' $202 million. "Spider-Man" wiped out "Star Wars: Episode's V and VI, The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and Forrest Gump, becoming the 6th highest grossing movie. Now the only thing that stands in way of the top five is a huge T-Rex. |
