'Black' Reign
The "Men in Black" reigned supreme this week, beating old standards and old box office, as it grossed $54.1 million this weekend, totaling $90 million for the week.  by Mark Whipkey
Spider-Man did it in three.  Star Wars Episode II did it in five. But Men in Black 2 fell slightly short of the $100 million mark for one week.

The Men in Black sequel, did not score low numbers, nontheless with  $18 million on its wednesday opening.  By Friday it had already grossed $36 million in two days.  So with its whopping $54.1 million opening weekend it has creeped up on the $100 million mark and should have no problem surpassing it this week.
With less laughs and excitement the 'Men in Black'
managed to score big numbers once again with their sequel.
So Men in Black 2 is most definitley a success, scoring the fourth biggest opening of the summer just under Scooby Doo's $54.1 million. So how does this movie stack up to the original.  Well it beats the original's opening of $79.3 million.

Back in 1997,
Men in Black made $14 million on its opening day, $14.2 million on that Thursday and its opening weekend had a $51 million take.  With those numbers in mind the sequel has surpassed the original.  As for the best Fourth of July opening that crown is neither held by Men in Black 1 or 2, but by another Will Smith hit, Independence Day, which holds the record at a $96.1 million opening.  Well there's always hope for Men in Black 3.

The box office was back in "Black" this weekend as
Men in Black scored $54.1 million with a $90 million opening week.  In second was Mr. Deeds with a excellent second weekend with $18.8 million totaling $74 million, but not good enough to best his last hit. If this was 1999 Adam Sandler would be looking at a $20 million second weekend for Big Daddy which had already grossed $90 million by this time.  In third was family friendly, Like Mike, which opened the same day as Men in Black 2, with $13 million for total of $20 million.  Fourth this week was Lilo and Stitch, finally outscoring Minority Report in a battle that has been going on since both movies opened, with $12.7 million, finishing the week with $103.1 million, becoming the fifth movie of the summer to break the $100 million mark.  A feat already done by Spider-Man, Star Wars Episode II, Scooby Doo, and The Sum of All Fears.  Finally, bringing up the rear this week was Minority Report.  Tom Cruise managed to stay strong with another $12.4 million take this weekend, tallying $96.8 million.

What's up for next week? A huge release schedule.  This coming week we will see four movies open,
The Crocodile Hunter, Halloween Resurrection, The Road to Perdition and Reign of Fire.  Now normally you would think in the summer you could easily expect the action movie to come out on top for the week, but the way things have been going this summer that is not the case.  With many comedies and family oriented movies coming out ahead thus far this summer, one would expect The Crocodile Hunter to lead the pack, but this week has much action and even an Academy Award Winner.  With Tom Hanks in Road to Perdition, Matthew McConahey in Reign of Fire and the return of 'bad ass' Michael Myers in another Halloween movie, your guess would be as good as mine.  But if I had to choose it would be Halloween Resurrection, or least I am hoping, but it will probably be The Crocodile Hunter who goes the victor.
