Sure there wasn't much competition this week, if you include Stealing Harvard, but did we really think that Barbershop would open this big. If more high profile actors such as Al Pacino and Robert Deniro could not pull big numbers so far this September, certainly Ice Cube and company wouldn't. But they have. I guess what it all comes down to is that the movie must be that good. Moviegoers no a bad movie from a good one. These days word of mouth is what sells the movie and you can't put a price tag on that. Ice Cube really hasn't established himself as a serious actor, but maybe that is about to change. His last movie, All About the Benjamins only grossed a total of $25 million. In the past he has starred in high profile roles along side George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg in Three Kings($60 million), John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars($8.7 million), but let's not forget the unforgettable roles in

Ice Cube does not sell out this week as Barbershop goes straight to the top.

Higher Learning and Boyz in the Hood($57.8 million). So Ice Cube does have potential to be a big star. With his Friday he brings much appeal back to African American entertainment. And with the second sequel this November, Friday After Next, he may have two hits this year to pull him out of his slump. So Barbershop led the pack this week opening with $20.6 million, making the first movie of September to open with more than $12 million. Will this be the end to the box office slump, probably not, this weekend was most likely just a breakout of what is not to come. In second, is the movie that won't quit nor give up the number two spot untill it hits number one. My Big Fat Greek Wedding brought in another $10.7 million, which totals $110.4 so far. All in all a good movie but what the hype is all about I will never know. Anyway the movie fails to drop in numbers and has repeat business for the fourth week in a row. WOW. Third was One Hour Photo, another movie to watch for, as it opened in more theaters this week pushing for a wider release. This movie made $8 million this week, adding the total to $14.5 million in just four weeks, not to mention the fact that it's first week it opened to only seven theaters. Fourth, dropping half of what it did last week was Swimfan with $6 million totaling $19.6 million, expect that movie to fall off next week. And rounding out the top five was the other

opener this week, Stealing Harvard with only $6 million. I guess Tom Greene's 20 seconds of fame is up. Next week we have a huge week as we see four wide and two limited releases. The reason why I even mention the limited releases is that it seems that that is the way to go now adays for movie studios, allow curiosity to set in about the movie and then slowly open it wider. This has brought My Big Fat Greek Wedding much success and soon One Hour Photo and The Good Girl will also reap the benefits. So this week in wide release is the martial arts actioner starring Antonio Banderas in Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever, Susan Sarandon and Goldie Hawn in The Banger Sisters, Heath Ledger in The Four Feathers, and Kevin Bacon and Charlize Theron are Trapped. In limited release we have Secretary and Susan Sarandon pulling double duty this week along side Dustin Hoffman in Moonlight Mile. So its going to be a busy week at the movies. But still I don't expect these movies to pull big numbers this weekend due to their lack of advertisement. The only one really getting any publicity is The Four Feathers and maybe alittle bit of Ecks vs. Sever, but not much. So anything can happen.
