Life As We Know It

The Flying Spot Players' collection of shorts is produced under the series title LIFE AS WE KNOW IT.

The objective is to create stimulating live-action photoplays using visual techniques borrowed directly from the domain of the editorial cartoon.

Editorial cartoons are typically able to creatively manipulate images to provide a refreshing perspective on the intended topic. Similarly, the visuals in these live-action films often take the subjects deliberately out of their usual context and insert them freely into another. This allows us to graphically illustrate the underlying connections that exist between various aspects of contemporary society.

Another technique is to give physical form to normally invisible or hidden themes, thereby interpreting human activity in a manner that traditional drama or documentary cannot.

In essence, LIFE AS WE KNOW IT is a series of video portraits, each depicting an aspect of our society, but portraying it as a "caricature'.

The content concerns itself with the general trends and patterns that shape our popular culture:

bulletour love affair with computers and electronic technology
bulletour relentless dependence on the personal automobile
bulletour obsession with body image and sex appeal
bulletour pursuit of convenience and pampered lifestyle
bulletour struggle for personal power and status

Potential themes also include television violence, advertising, business ethics, noise pollution, overpopulation, suburban sprawl, government bureaucracy, etc.

Each piece in some way represents an element of civic concern, and provides an opportunity to cast a refreshing light on our conduct as a society.

The series is designed to be produced on an ongoing basis, when time permits, as we all have careers and families to tend to as well.
