HOW TO - CONSTRUCTION
CONSTRUCTION IGNITION & FUEL
This is the "How To" section of our site.  On this page you will find the basic principle behind making and using a combustion type potato cannon.  We have outlined the best sources for fuel and ignition and also what can be modified to create better performance and looks.  Click on any thumbnail for a larger image.
What to get...
Everything that you need to create a very powerful combustion type spud gun can/should be available for purchased from your local hardware store, that's what we found anyway.  When you go to the store to purchase your parts, softly dry fit the parts to make sure that you get the right sizes.  The parts that we have listed may be called slightly different things where you live but they should be basically the same.  Prices are just an indication of approximate cost.

Construction
Before glueing anything together double check for a dry fit of all parts.  Use a fine grade file to tidy up any frayed PVC piping and clean all dust, dirt and grime from all parts.  Do all glueing in a well ventilated area as the glue emits toxic fumes that may be harmful to you and others.  Find a suitable working surface and lay down some old newspaper or something to catch accidental drips/spills.  Let's get into it!

We used Plumbers Mate brand uPVC Pipe Cement for all glueing.

1. The Chamber. Apply glue to exterior shaft of PVC Adapter M.I. 50mm x 2 and to 50mm internal end of the PVC Level invert 100 x 50 mm and press tight and hold for 5 - 10 seconds.  Then apply glue onto 100mm external end of PVC Level invert 100 x 50 mm and internal non-threaded end of PVC Coupling Threaded 100mm and again hold for 5 - 10 seconds.  Set these aside to dry for a minimum of 24 hours.  Don't be tempted to use it before 24 hours as a friend did so and it detonated, injuring his hand.  The construction of the cap is explained under IGNITION.

2. 50mm Potato Barrel.  Glue external shaft of PVC Adapter F.I. 50mm x 2 and both internal ends of PVC Coupling Plain 50mm.  Also apply glue to about 50mm of end of PVC Plumbing Pipe 50mm x 1m and press all three parts together as tightly as possible and then put it to the side with the chamber to dry for 24 hours.

3. 65mm Tennis Ball Barrel.  Glue external shaft of PVC Adapter F.I. 50mm x 2 and 50mm internal end of PVC Level Invert 65 x 50mm and press together firmly.  Once together, apply glue to external 65mm end of PVC Level Invert 65 x 50mm and both internal ends of PVC Coupling Plain 65mm and also externally about 50mm of PVC Plumbing Pipe 65mm x 1m.  Press all parts together tightly for 5 - 10 seconds and then put it to the side with the chamber and 50mm barrel to dry for 24 hours.

4. Plunger.  The plunger is the easiest part to make.  All you need to do is shorten the broom handle to the length that you require and drill a 1 - 2mm hole in the flat end.  Drill the same size hole in the centre of the 45mm disc and using an appropriate sized screw, screw it on.  Leave it how it is or paint it, it's your choice.

Now you have the basic 100mm Combustion Chamber, 50mm Potato barrel and the 65mm Tennis Ball barrel.  The end cap is where the spark leads are placed and how to do this is and also a bit about what to and what not to use for fuel is explained in the next section.
