The afternoon was going by slow, but good. After a few tense moments the two began to ease themselves. Buck was wondering why she had chosen him. If anything he seemed the most unlikely one for her to fall for. She was strong, intelligent, and beautiful. His shyness made him seem bland in comparison. Just like he had the night before he was silent, listening to her talk about whatever topic came to mind. "Well, what do you think?" she asked "Hum, what?" "Am I boring you?" she questioned. "No...I was just thinking about something," he remarked "A wild guess but could it be why I asked you here today?" A little shocked by her reply he gave an uneasy smile. "Yes, that was one thing." "You seemed so mysterious I had to find out what was behind the mystery." Laura's eyes moved to the left of Buck towards the bushes. "Did you hear that?" Buck stood up and offered her his hand. "Stay behind me." Buck slowly, and quietly walked towards the bushes with Laura attached to his side. He removed his gun, taking aim he shot three bullets down into the dirt. Cody and Jimmy jumped up reaching for the sky. "Don't shoot, don't shoot?" screamed Cody. Laura released a sigh then laughed, but Buck wasn't so relieved. "Sorry fellas, I didn't know that company was coming or I would have packed more," joked Laura. Jimmy walked up to Buck and tried to lighten up the mood, but Buck wouldn't here of it. He reached down and pulled up the blanket, balling it up as he head back to his horse. "What's wrong with him?" asked Cody. Later that night at the bunk house Buck was still sore at Jimmy and Cody for their rude entrance. Laura seemed unfazed by it. The night went by as normal, everyone involved in a deep conversation about the days events. Buck excused himself and headed towards the barn. Ike knew something was wrong, so he followed behind him. Sitting alone playing with a piece of straw was Buck. Ike motioned for him to confess his problem. A bit hesitant he told Ike about the embarrassing thing that Jimmy, and Cody did. Then he went on to reveal his feelings for Laura, feelings he felt were unwanted by her now. Gunshots rang out followed by screams then silence. Buck and Ike raced out of the barn to see what was going on. The bunk house was surrounded by Indians. Some of the braves had Jimmy, Lou, Kid and the others pushed into the corner of the porch. Their guns had been taken and they were being held hostage. Another brave dragged a kicking and screaming Laura out by her hair and threw her down to the ground. A tall Indian stepped down off of his horse and went over to her. He carefully looked at her face, then her hair. He signaled to the brave that was standing above her. The man grabbed her by her arm and pulled her up. She kicked him and tried to run. Buck saw her as she ran, her faced was full of fear. Everything seemed to be in slow motion as she was scooped up by a young brave on a horse. The others mounted up and rode off. "I can't believe it, who was that?" asked Emma Teaspoon wiped his brow then looked to see Buck bent down in the road. He was looking at the hoof prints made by the men's horses. Teaspoon told everyone to go inside. He walked over to Buck. "Cherokee, isn't it?" asked Teaspoon. "Yeah, they are a long way from home Teaspoon. Why her?" Teaspoon put his arm around Buck's shoulder and the two men walked inside. The others shaken but not harmed awaited an answer for what just happened. "Laura was the daughter of one of my old friends, he rode with me back when I was a ranger in Texas. After years of running and living on the edge Jack decided that he wanted a family, and to settle down. He fell in love with a Cherokee woman." "What does this have to do with what happened?" asked Lou. "Yeah Teaspoon Cherokee are no where near here," remarked Kid. "When her mother died during a labor, the Cherokee blamed Jack, and demanded that Laura be returned to her mother's family. Jack ran, he knew if he gave Laura to the Cherokee he would never see her again. I promised Jack that I would look after her if anything ever happened to him. The letter I got told me that he was dead, and that Laura was on her way." "Don't worry Teaspoon we'll get her back," demanded Buck The boys each agreed to get her back. They packed up their stuff and mounted their horses. Buck analyzed the hoof prints they lead southeast. Riding through out the night, they found no trace except the hoof prints. There was no proof that these would lead them to her, or if they even belonged to the Indian ponies. All they had was hope. Finally in the early morning hours The riders stumbled across the make shift camp of the Cherokee Braves. They studied the camp and Buck knew that he would have the best luck trying to get her out of the camp safely. He reached into his saddle bag and pulled out a strap of hand woven beads and designs. "Teaspoon, let me make an attempt to get her first, OK." said Buck. Teaspoon, wasn't completely sure about the idea but he agreed. Buck took off his shirt then put on his face paint. Then wrapped the strap cross ways around him then headed for the camp. The boys took their spots if things got out of hand they would run in. Buck decided to sneak inside the camp first to avoid all confrontations. As he carefully crept around the tents he saw her, sitting on her knees. Her clothes had been taken off all that remained was her slip, her hair was matted and dissolved. You could tell that she had been crying. Standing above her were two elder people, the old woman went towards here, she touched Laura's head then went back to her husband. Just then Buck felt a sharp point in his back, he turned to see a young man with an arrow. "AERW NUEWM ISM " The young brave lead Buck into the center of camp. He pushed Buck down on to his knees beside Laura. She wrapped her arms around his neck, then was pulled apart. The chief walked over to Buck and examined the strap he was wearing. "Kiowa brave, what do you want here?" he asked "I came for the girl, I'm am Running Buck brother of Red Bear Kiowa war chief" "What do you want with her?" "I came to free her, she doesn't know about the Indian world. She was raised by a white man, you cannot force her to live a life she doesn't know," -Buck "The white stole her mother, and then her stole her. We have to protect our own kind."-Cheif "She is a half breed, like me. She'll never be accepted by the tribe, as I wasn't accepted by mine."-Buck "The only way she can leave this tribe is by marriage. Do you care enough for her to have her as a soul mate, a love, a wife." Proclaimed the chief. Buck looked at the scared face of Laura. She gave him a weak little smile then turned away. This request was blunt but it was the only way to save her, Buck agreed. The chief took Buck's hand then he took Laura's hand. The Cherokees had simple weddings. A white ribbon wrapped around the hands meant new life and the joining of it. After about five minutes, the Chief announced that Running Buck was now a brother of the Cherokee. Buck took his new bride by the hand and they walked out unharmed. Once they were safely outside of the Cherokee camp, Buck released her hand. "Your free now, you can go I know Cody would Love to see you again, he can't seem to stop talking about you."-Buck. Laura put her hand on Buck's face. "I'm your wife now Buck, besides Cody can be annoying."-Laura Looking deep into her eyes. "You don't have to be you know."-Buck "No, I want to be." she replied The boys ran down to where Buck and Laura were standing. "What was all of that?" asked Jimmy "Boys that was a Cherokee wedding." Said Teaspoon, Cody's jaw dropped. "Wedding?" asked Kid. "I had too they wouldn't release her any other way."-Buck "I guess we just lost a bunk mate, hey Cody." Joked Jimmy. The two newly weds went walking off together. Later that night while the others slept Buck remained awake. Laura on the edge of sleep glanced over at him, then got up to sit beside him. "Is that the only reason why you did it?" she asked. "No, of course not. I loved you since I first saw you." He leaned over and kissed her. "I promise to make you happy Buck!"
