Activities for Famous Floridians

  • Make a Biography Board. Pick a Famous Floridian (FF). List their accomplishments. Include pictures from throughout their life or draw a portrait of them.
  • Pick a person from the FF list and make a timeline of their life. Tell what they did to change Florida.
  • Pick a Floridian from the list. Dress like them and give an oral report of their life.
  • Write a fictional story with you as a main character about one of the FF on the list. What do you think it would be like to live at that time in history? What are some activities you and your FF might have done together?
  • Tell some things that might be different in Florida if the railroad magnates, environmentalists and developers had never been born.
  • Look at a map of Florida. Can you find any counties, cities, rivers or streets named after any of these FF? Do you live near one?
  • Pretend you are an early settler in Florida. Write about what you would do if you met Chief Billy Bowlegs or Osceola.
  • Make a list of the famous politicians. Write down some of the contributions they made that have improved the lives of Floridians.
  • On a blank Florida outline map show the railroad routes that Flagler, Chipley and Plant developed. Be sure to use different colors for each and include a legend.
  • Take a tour of a Winn Dixie or Publix supermarket. If you arrange it with the manager ahead of time you can get a guided tour and learn how a grocery store operates and go behind into the freezer section.
  • Draw a picture of the Everglades environment. Go to a sanctuary or preserve and draw the trees, grasses, water and animals that you see.
  • Draw a cartoon character of your own. Make up a comic strip using your character.
  • Come up with your own invention. Draw it out. Make a model. Keep a written record of why you think your invention is necessary or useful, the steps you took to make your model, what happened when you tried to make your invention work, the end result. Draw pictures of your model in the various stages of production or take photographs. *Remember many famous inventors had to try many times and tweak their original plans to get an invention to work.
  • Pretend you’re a developer in Florida at the turn of the 20th century. Choose a location on the Florida map that hasn’t been developed. Tell why you chose that location. Make a model of your town/city using various elements: paper mache', boxes, paint or just draw an aerial map. Write an article about your new town or city that you would want published in northern papers to attract new residents. Include a map in your article.
  • Plant a citrus tree and care for it. If you already have a citrus tree, care for it and help harvest the fruit when it’s ripe. Make juice. Experiment by adding together the juice of different kinds of citrus to come up with your own secret blend. Design a label for your juice.
  • Go watch a local sports team play a game.
  • Write a story about growing up in Florida in the 21st century.
  • Tell the history of cattle ranching in Florida. Is it still an important industry today? Why or why not? Draw pictures of various Florida cattle.
  • Write a poem about Florida.
  • Design a building that could house the largest collection of Florida historical items. Try to have the building itself be a testimony to Florida’s history.
  • Read the very interesting story of Eddie Rickenbacker’s life. Design a logo for an airline that you would base out of Florida.
  • Paint your face like a clown and put on a family circus. Serve popcorn and peanuts to your guests. Use any willing animals you have for the circus acts. Be sure not to hurt the animals.
