Photos 1-2. Compare the bill size with that of a Thayer's Gull (photo 1) and Herring Gull (photo 2) in the foreground. The tertials appear neatly speckled at some angles (photo 2) but the lower tertials have a solid tan area in the center (photo 1). The tips of primaries 7-10 are badly frayed, but the entire outer margins (not just the tips) of all outer primaries are narrowly edged white, the outer webs are mostly light brown, and the inner webs are paler.
Photo 3. The bill (especially), body and legs are smaller than the Herring Gull at right and similar in size to the adult Thayer's Gull at left. The body was smaller, the bill much smaller and the legs shorter than all Glaucous-winged, Western and Herring Gulls present (confirmed by additional photos not posted here). The body was larger than that of California Gulls but the bill was similar in size (confirmed by additional photos not posted here). The head often appeared blocky, suggestive of a male (females tend to have rounder heads).

Photo 4: The inner primaries 3-6 appear white with medium brown along the shaft and a darker subterminal spot.
Photos 5-6: The rectrices are pale gray in the center, much paler than the dark rump bars, with darker subterminal spots and narrow white tips (photo 5). The bases of all rectrices are white with dark stippling which is more extensive on the outer rectrices (photo 6).

Although I often observed the bird in flight, I obtained only one very blurry and distant flight photo (not shown here). The secondaries and outer primaries were slightly yet distinctly darker than the wing coverts and inner primaries, and were about as dark as the tail band. The dorsal wing pattern resembled Thayer's Gull more than Kumlien's Gull.
