The Meaning and History of Flowers

ABOUT US

This site is the off-shoot of a personal quest.

I was never a rose person. I have the urge to stay away from the routine - Well, so do many!! Anyways, when I usually bought flowers, (you guessed right!!) - I never used to buy roses. My favorites have always been lillies, daisies or tulips. Somehow, I have always thought that lillies and tulips possess an elegant and subtle form of expression - something majestic, if I may add.

So, as you can imagine - I started wondering as to when, why and how people started using flowers as expressions of love, romance and other emotions. Flowers, as my opening statements in the home page state, have been used to adorn Gods (by the Greeks and the Indians) to signify respect. Flowers seem to have been used by emperors (Caeser and the Roman use of the olive crowns) and rulers as part of jewellery (probably again signifying respect) and are presently used as messengers of human emotions.

Flowers seem to have developed a language of their own. Red Roses are generally attributed to love, passion and romance. Roses seem to be the eternal favorite in the United States, United Kingdom and many other countries world wide.

Besides the meanings of flowers, this site provides some suggestions and reviews of florists to purchase flowers from, some suggestions on flower preservation methods and some other general links. If you have a similar site and would like to be included in our link index, please email me and I will be happy to add you to our list.

Your feedback, if any, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
