| I spun around, and the girl whom I had pulled out was coming up behind me. Her blonde hair flapped in the cool breeze. " You okay?" she asked. "Fine. Help me." I ordered. She nodded, and instinctivlely knew what we were doing. It took alot of effort, and when we finally got all the kids a safe distance from the bus, smoke was billowing out of it. I was terrified. For the kids,me, and espeacilly Joe. He was stretched out on the ground with a few coats under him. A few kids had woken up and were milling around helping each other. " Hey, do you hear that?" the girl leaned her head to the side." I think it's the ambulance." She was right. I heard a high wail as help made it's way over to us. The kids awake let out a cheer. A white van suddenly screeched down the embankment to us. Uniformed men and women, all in blue and orange, rushed to us. A large firetruck slammed to a stop and about 30 men poured out of it. Other trucks came and soon there were so many people there. A woman in blue, came over to me. She explained she was an EMT and was here to help. " I heard you and that blonde girl pulled all those kids out. What's your name, Sweetheart?" She had a simple Souhthern draw to her voice. " Yeah,we did. My name's Leighandra Van Buren. " "Okay, lemme see your eyes, lookit me." She flashed something that looked like a pen in my eyes. She wrote something down on a clipboard. "You have very pretty eyes." She commented. " Yeah, I 'm the only one I know who has violet eyes." Suddenly I was very dizzy, and the ground hurried up to my face at an alarming rate.******************************************************** "And now, for the story about one of the bravest little girls we in the Bowling Green area have seen for a while, we bring to you live Kevin Conan. " The screen changed from a pert young red haired woman in a office like building, to a blacked haired reporter in a feild. Behind him lay a wrecked yellow bus.It lay on it's side and was surrounded by firemen with long hoses desperatley spraying it. There was no fire now, but they had to be sure. EMT's and other medical personal swarmed busily behind him. " Thank you Marie. Tonight, we bring to you the story of two little girls who saved their entire bus as it was catching fire. Sandra Ridder, 14, and another girl pulled 8 students out of a burning bus. Sandra, who is currently in stable condition, is in Bowling Green Children's Hospital and is only suffering from a concussion and minor bruises." he turned and caught sight of an offical looking man, "Sir, sir.......," he loped over to him, " excuse me, but do you know what is going on here?" The man had dark hair and stony features." Uh,yes." He looked a bit uncomfortable," The bus tipped on it's side, so the some of the injuries are extensive. We've got 8 children with injuries ranging from hypothermia and broken legs, to a minor nose-bleed. Sadly, we have two deaths. One was Susanna Miller, the bus driver. She was killed instantly of a broken neck. The other was a little girl. We aren't allowed to release her name." The reporter seemed disapoointed he had no story, but he saw a woman talking to another uniformed man. His jacket read 'coroner.' The reporter hurried over to them, camerman in tow. " Excuse me sir and mam, would you like to comment on this tradegy?" He shoved the microphone in their faces. The woman, who was an EMT grimaced, then said," Well, I was treating another girl. She died of enternal bleeding of the abdomen. She also suffered a concussion and a broken shoulder blade. It seemed as of she repeatledly struck her shoulder several times on a blunt surface. On top of that, she inhaled alot of dangerous smoke from the fire. When I was examining her, she just looked at me funny, and fell over. She died before she hit the ground." The EMT wiped a stray tear from her eye. The reporter was still hungry." Is there anything you can tell us about her?" She looked thoughtful for a moment. "Yes, yes there is. She had the most beatiful violet eyes." |
