. . Being one of the most popular Gundam series
this decade had to offer, the
side story of Gundam namely Gundam wing, had a huge following due to many
successful aspect to its story, character development, and mecha designs.
Those who are familiar with the TV series can relate to the similarity
that exist between this side story and the original Gundam series. In its
latest installment, Gundam Wing Endless Waltz, the series has fully
captured the essense of not only its predecessor, but enhanced in more
than just the story, it is simply one of the best OVA for Gundam, well
within the same standard with Gundam 0083: stardust memories.
Endless waltz consists of 3 episodes, each with excellent focus on not
only a general "revolution" plot, but gives insights to the past of the
pilots who we know very little of, and further enhance the substances that
these hero brings to this already outstanding believable envrionment.
Mariemaia and her servant, Dekim Barton, plans to carry out her father's
wishes and take over the united earth nation. By organizing an army of new
mobile suits called Serpent Custom, she intend to carry out the original
guidelines for "Operation meteor", which is the same operation that the
Gundam pilots were originally involved. However, the true operation meteor
involves more than just sending 5 pilots to earth. Mariemaia promptly
kidnaps Vice Minster Relena Darlian, wanting to use her as an ambassador
to the people so Mariemaia can take over the nation.
Gundam pilots, who fought so hard to keep peace, without a doubt, isn't
going to let some dictator destroy what they have spend their lives
fighting for. While Quatre Winner, Gundam Sandrock's pilot, journey
towards the sun to retrieve the gundams they've left behind, Duo Maxwell
and Heero Yui, with the help of Noin and Sally from the Preventer
organization, enters the colony L3 x18999 to prevent "operation meteor"
from taking place. Dekim now mobilizes the entire Mariemaia army and
descends to earth to complete the first phase of the operation. What can
these heroes do to prevent certain disaster to the people residing on
earth? Wufei, the pilot of Nataku Gundam, fought vigorously for Mariemaia
against the heroes, what's his objective? These answers ties closely with
the original theme of the TV series and is further enhanced in this brief
presentation that can be classified as a short classic in Gundam
history.
The show itself is without a doubt, the best Gundam has to offer in this
past decade. The extensive use of CG, which is flawlessly integrated in
the drawings , can be seen throughout the show, grabbing the attention of
the viewers without distrubing the atmosphere of the overall story. The
details presented in the show is so exquisit that it is hard to imagine
this is actually mostly drawn by hand. Pieces of metal scraps and pipes,
along with the explosions that seemed to go in every direction, is so
realistic that I swear I haven't seen this kind of perfection since Char's
couterattack, and that is a movie, not an OVA. The direction is also
uncanny to the point that each scene, although might be confusing at
first, will slowly stand out and as viewed a second time, can prove to be
efficient way of storytelling in a short alloted time. My personal
favorite is the end credit cut scenes that is supposely be some crucial
part of the story, with credits and music running over them to save time.
I find it to be not only refreshing, but exhilarating. I haven't seen
anything done quite like it, and I wouldn't mind if they do everything the
way they did it in the end credits. I find the overlap not only very
artistic, but fasinating. There are so many good points to the show that
it is impossible to point them all out in such a small review. One thing
is for sure, this one of a kind OVA series, now made into a movie, is
something not to be missed.
