. . Many Many mecha fans have long heard of
the Gundam fame from decades ago. It is
not very hard to see why considering Gundam is one of the most
revolutionary mecha show ever created. Its legion of fans are spellbond by
its characters, settings, events, and technology. Although the gundam
universe is a rather complicated matter to discuss, one could easily
follow the show by understanding some of the back ground events that have
helped to create this surrealistic world.
Char's counterattack, the fourth movie in the Gundam series that concludes
the conflict between the two major character in the show, is definitely my
favorite movie of all time.
It has all the elements that made Gundam so famous, and much more.
It exhibits numerous excellent qualities that provide sufficient evidence
of being an outstanding movie.
The story takes place in the future of the Gundam Universe. Char Azanable
aka "Red Comet" has finally inherited his father's name and organized his
own militia called "neo-jion" (neo means new). Char intend to drop
metorites
to exterminate all living things on earth to "protect" the planet
from the unworthy people that still live on the planet. Of course, the
Earth Federation is not about to let Char have his wish, but they take no
military action against the ever increasing threat of "nuclear winter". In
the admist of negociation between the two sides, our old pal, nemesis of
Char, Amuro Rey and the Londo Bell fleet takes matters into their own
hands and started the resistance against the overwhelming Neo-Jion
fleet.
The overall animation of the film is outstanding compared even to recent
mecha animes, being inferior only to Macross Plus. The film uses fast
frame rate to illustrate mecha movement and achieves almost flawless 3D
environment without the use of computer software. What impresses me the
most is that the production team seems to pay very close attention to the
motion of mechas and camera angles. For instance, in the beginning, Char's
mobile suit Sazabi was launching from the dock and its engine blast,
syncronized with its movement, generate a lot of depth as it decrease in
size as it moves away from the ship.
Further more, so much care is put in the movie that when combat starts,
the camera that follow the fights seems to rotate and again allow viewers
visually see multiple structure of the mechas and its movements.
Without exaggeration, the battle field is reminecent of Saving Private
Ryan. Instead of having people dropping like flies, mobile suit explode
that they are made of cardboard and plastic. However, i must admit that
this movie must have the biggest battle scenes I have ever seen in an
anime movie. It is very close to the third movie of Gundam: an encounter
in space, but without a doubt, the animation is far superior.
Okay, so maybe space combat is wonderful in this film, but what about its
story? Well, honestly, the story couldn't be better. It has all the
tradition elements that fans have come to know. ie. new mecha (fully
integrated operational psychommu system, funnels, Special funnel generated
i-field, nuclear), Diplomatic relations, betrayal, and much much more. I
think Tomino utilized that ideas embedded in the popular series Zeta
Gundam and refined it into Char's Counterattack.
I am very certain that some people would disagree with my opinion.
Nonetheless, I am very certain that if you are either a fan of Gundam or
know quite a bit about the series, this movie is a must see.
