As the great Miyazaki stated recently that the current animation market has begun to wither with projects that lack orginiality, Fruits Basket clearly was one defiant anime that completely broke the traditional anime mold. Neither scifi techno babble nor sword wield- ing fantasy beat-them-up'er, FB stole the heart of anime viewer with dramatic mood changes that created its story and the characters that tells them.

As "combined" as an anime can get, FB did not fall into the same mindset of most anime, and thus, it redefined some of the series from which it appears to have copied from. FB on the surface can be identified as a Ranma 1/2 show, as the characters are possessed by spirits that cause them to change. Nonetheless, it is nothing like the light hearted- ness of Ranma and its wacky antics. The strongest element of FB was clearly the lack of its identity in the anime genre. It is neither full of laughs, nor is it heart breaking sad. It is, however, filled with both. It doesn't poke fun of the identity of the various animals that possess them, nor does it intentionally make the curse, as it should be considered, a handicap. It doesn't dwell at the pain of the characters, but it clearly expose them to the viewers. Almost no thoughts were concealed from the viewers and yet no cliche is used to convey them. FB gives you laugh at the right moment, and make you cry when it deems necessary. It pulls no fake punches and no forces were ever involved to generate emotions. FB is simply a film that has no real competitors. It seeks none, and none can withstand the way it delivers its powerful messages. It draws no blood with its sharp witted humor, and yet it can help with its message of hope.

FB is not only original, but the writers catered not for those seeking cheap thrills, or simply artistically beauty. The story is about hope, that shines through even when the pain, the pain of being left out, is overwhelming. The message is quite clear:try to see the world in a different way. The duality of happy and sad must not be ignored, so in the darkest hours, there is always hope.
