In the preliminary round, each team will play all other teams in both conferences. At the end of the preliminary round, each team will be ranked in its respective conference, based on the total points accumulated by the team.
For the men's league, the top four teams from each conference will qualify for the league quarter-final play-offs. The play-offs will be in a knockout format, with the winners of the quarter-finals proceeding to the semi-finals, and the winners of the semi-finals proceeding to the final. The winner of the final match will be declared the overall league champion.
For the ladies' league, the top two teams from each conference will qualify for the league play-offs. The play-offs will be in a knockout format, with the winners of the semi-finals proceeding to the final. The winner of the final match will be declared the overall league champion.
The points system to determine the conference rankings for the SFL2004 is as follows:
3 points to be awarded for a victory
1 point to be awarded for a draw
0 point to be awarded for a loss
