22. Gilbert SAUNDERSwas born about 1809 in , Gates, NC. He owned on 22 Jan 1834 in , Gates, NC.(98) He appeared on Census in 1840 in , Gates, NC.(99) This could be 2 families living together. He owned Spikes Mill Pond in May 1843 in , Gates, NC.(98) He appeared on Census in 1850 in , Gates, NC.(100) He appeared on Census in 1860 in , Gates, NC.(101) He was described as 6 ft 1 in, light complextion, blue eyes, dark hair in 1862 in Winton, Hertford, NC. He served in the military before Apr 1862 in Winton, Hertford, NC.(21) Served in CO 'C' & CO 'I' 2nd Calvary CSA; discharged in Kinston, NC 19 Apr 1862 with Medical disability for "Severe hemorods, agrivated by horse back riding" (taken from Discharge papers) He died after Apr 1862 in Winton, Hertford, NC. (21) He was shot by a band of people known locally as the "BUFFALOS", because he had joined the Confederacy. He was supposedly taken abt a mile N of Winton & hanged upside down in an Oak tree. Later known as the "Hanging Tree", because 11 or 12 people were hanged there. His wife drove an ox cart under him, cut the rope, scooped his brains up into a box & buried him about  half a mile behind their house. William Bryant ASKEW & his wf Mary Ann 'Miriam' SAUNDERS are buried beside him. He was married to Nancy WILLIAMS about 1836 in , , NC.

23. Nancy WILLIAMS was born about 1815 in , , NC. She appeared on Census in 1850 in , Gates, NC.(100) She died between 1851 and 1853 in , Gates, NC. Children were:

child iii. Robert James SAUNDERS was born on 7 May 1841 in , Gates, NC. (21) He appeared on Census in 1850 in , Gates, NC. (100) He appeared on Census in 1860 in , Gates, NC. (101) He served in the military in 1862 in , , NC. (21) He was in the battle at Gettysburg & was wounded by a rifle ball. The ball was wedged between his 5th & 6th rib, which was not removed. He spent time in the Hospital at Spotslvania, VA. When he went back to his company & was taken prisoner. He was sent to prison at Elmira, NY. After the war ended he had to walk home from the prison in NY. He appeared on Census in 1870 in Reynoldson Twp, Gates, NC.(47) He died (Private). He was buried in Confederate Cem, Raleigh, Wake, NC.

She appeared on Census in 1850 in , Gates, NC.(100) She appeared on Census in 1860 in , Gates, NC.(101) She appeared on Census in 1870 in Reynoldson Twp, Gates, NC. (47) She appeared on Census in 1910 in Hall Twp, Gates, NC. (10) She died (Private). (21) Family tradition has it that she was struck by lightning & killed, abt a mile North of Winton, NC while picking peaches. She was buried in Askew Cem, Winton, Hertford, NC.(102)
