1) Scan disk :- You will usually see this when you don't shut computer down properly, and it is your computer trying to put itself back to how it should be, but you also run Scan disk at least once a week if not daily. The computer knows where all it's files and programs should be stored on your hard disk, these can get scrambled up and slow your computer down while it looks for them for eg:- you always keep your wallet, driving license and keys where you know where they are, just lose your keys and think about how much it slows you down, so it is very important to Scan disk. To get to Scan disk go to start button in bottom left hand corner, then look for programmes, then accessories, then system tools it will be in the list of system tools it has the symbol showing next to 1) at begining of this information. You may see a list of drives begining with the letter C: going up to possibly F: or more. Always choose standard NOT thorough. Do Not try to defragment any letter that is your cdrom, or readwrite your computer will not understand this. To scan disk will be a tonic for your computer. Some computers have more than one hard disk or have a large hard disk that has been partitioned (more later about partitions)

2) Defrag :- disk defragmenter this will always start with C: and will include all the drive letters of your hard drives at this point it will always ask if you want to defragment drive C: but if you scroll down the list it will show all your drives choose all drives to defrag, any drive that hasn't been used lately will not be scrambled and will only take a very short time, however drive C: which is the one used most will take a lot longer and at this point you might as well go and make dinner, bath the baby, colour your hair, get a round of golf in, even go fishing. however the more often you do it the less time it takes, if you want to see how it is progressing press details, this is very boring watching little squares dissapearing and changing colours it's your life. You will find disk defragmenter in system tools as you did above.

3) Windows Updates :- these updates are free and should be downloaded on a regular basis . On start menu(start button bottom left corner) you should see an icon similar to the one above, click on it and it will take you to the Windows updates page. if you do not have this icon you need to go to windowsupdate the most important ones to do are critical updates these are security updates that protect your computer and it would be a good idea if you also downloaded the critcal update notifier(found at the top of the picks of the month section) as this will then popup on your screen to tell you that there is a new update to be downloaded. I could go on lots about this section, but I'm not, as it is up to the individual what other updates they want to install, but please e-mail me anytime if you need help.
