Little Bluestem

Andropogon scoparius

Little Bluestem is one of the prettiest of the prairie grasses. generally grows from 2 to 3 feet tall. Since Little Bluestem is a bunching grass it is a good companion for prairie wildflowers. The plant in this photo is growing in a corner of our vegetable garden with a few other prairie plants, including Butterfly Milkweed (note pods) and Blue Grama, a shorter prairie grass.

Since Little Bluestem looks so different in different seasons, no one photograph can capture it. To see more Little Bluestem photos, click here!
