About the Federation of Lapidary and Geological Societies

The Federation of Lapidary and Geological Societies (F.L.A.G.S.) was formally established in 1972 by six Societies in the Home Counties and now comprises 14 Societies, (one of which is national and another in mid-Wales). F.L.A.G.S. is affiliated to The Geologists' Association.

The Federation is the only group in the United Kingdom to represent the collective special interests of those Societies which embrace both Lapidary skills (Gemstone polishing) and all aspects of Earth Sciences (Mineralogy, Fossils, etc.) in their Constitution. Delegates meet quarterly in the London area to provide the necessary co-ordination.

The aims of the Federation are:

  1. to exchange programmes and information of mutual interest,
  2. to promote inter-club meetings and co-operation,
  3. to negotiate the establishment of satisfactory relations for member Societies with landlords, landowners, tenants, dealers, etc.,
  4. to promote full co-operation with similar bodies, associations and organisations.

To fulfil its aspirations it is an observing body with English Nature ensuring that member Societies have up-to-date details of the inauguration of Sites of Special Scientific Interest, etc., and it represents Societies on current working parties dealing with access to sensitive sites. The "shop window" of the Federation is an exhibition of activities presented each year by member Societies at a geologically related function. These days we can be seen at the Rock 'n' Gem Show at Kempton Park in November.
