Interview with Evan from Steel Train
518:Could you say your name and what you do in the band?
ST:I'm evan winiker and i play bass
518:How did steel train come together?
ST:Long story, jack met scott, i knew jack, we met matthiass, we knew matt. haha. i guess that's the short hand version of it.
518:So where did the name of the band come from?
ST:It comes from a bob marley song.
518:What are the bands major music influnces?
ST:Oh they range from afro cuban beats to the lull of a songwriters guitar. we're trying to fuse together lots of what we grew up with in a giant melting pot.
518:How does the writing process go?
ST:Good question. it's different for every song. a lot of the time we'll be in our rehearsal space and we'll be jamming on something. one of us will say "that's great, let's go into that mid eastern section after that" and viola, we have a verse and a bridge. that's the jammy side of it. a lot of the other stuff is brought in by individuals who come up with something that everyone else is happy with. it's a very democratic process.
518:Which song on your upcoming album describes you the best?
ST:I couldn't say becuase i think what describes us best is the whole album. that's who we are.
518:Do you have a favorite venue or venue(s) you like to play in?
ST:The norva in virginia is clearly one of our favorites, as is mexicali blues in our hometown.
518:What's in your CD player right now?
ST:Medeski Martin and Wood.
518:What is the coolest band you have played with and do you have any crazy stories from touring?
ST:The coolest band we've played with is either robert randolph and the family band or garaj mahal. i have too many stories....
518:What made you get into music?
ST:I picked up the bass eight years ago and i've loved playing it ever since. i've always loved music, stepping into it was one of the best things that I ever did.
518:What are your plans for the next few months?
ST:Tour, tour and tour, and jam out in the back of the bus.
518:What's the last show you have been to and not performed?
ST:Levon Helms from the Band at mexicali Blues. What a show!
518:That's really all the questions I have I wanna thank evan from steel train is there anything else you would like to say
ST:I'd really like it for anyone that reads this to come up to me at a show to talk about what's going on in the middle east, because i've recently found that a lot of people are misinformed on the topic and i'd love to have an open dialogue about it. Thanks!
