The Wrong Place continued...
A huge black bear plowed out of the trees and headed straight for me. Double jumped between it and me and growled fiercely. The bear stopped in its tracks and eyed Double up and down as if to see if she was a challenge or not. I think Double knew she was outsized she kept giving me a quick look to see if I was moving yet and then would bark at me to tell me to get going.I slowly began to move backwards one step at a time, until I had managed to get behind the hill and out of sight of the bear. Running towards the place I had climbed down at a sudden dread came over me. My God I thought it is going to take me at least an hour to get up this, surely the bear can climb it quicker than I can. next thoughts flooded my mind and heart my Double my defender I left her behind I ran away and left her to fight that bear all by herself. Deep down I knew she couldn't hold it off for long so I kept going.  The whole time I was grasping at branches and rocks pulling myself up the side of the mountain, I was thinking of her and how terrible I was to leave her behind. As I reached the top a voice yelled out. "Hey young lady you shouldn't be out here." Didn't you hear about the mad bear loose out here. It already has hurt one person." After a quick erratic conversation with him, He explained that he and a group of game wardens were out hunting the bear. It was then I realized he had a gun. With out much thinking I grabbed the gun from him and literally slid down the mountain in ten minutes flat. I had to get to Double and I had to do it fast. I guess I startled that poor man quite a bit he didn't even holler when I snatched his gun. Just stood there staring as I went down the hill. It had been a long time since  I fired a gun. My grandfather was the the last one to teach me how. I hoped I could remember everything. As I rounded the hill once again my heart sank I didn't hear Double or the bear and I dreaded what I might find. Suddenly Double leapt out of the trees at me barking hysterically. I think she was saying stupid I told you to run! She ran right past me barking all the way so I decided it would be a good idea to run too.
