We had almost made it to the mountainside when there on my heels was the bear only this time he was really mad. He charged us like a raging bull and once again Double got between us but this time it didn't effect the bear it just kept coming. I knew if they started to fight Double would die so I had to shoot. I couldn't get a clean shot Double was running back in forth in front of it trying to distract it away from me. I knew there was going to be a solid kick from the shotgun so I tried to brace myself against a tree. I raised the gun got the bear in my sights took a breath and Ka-blam the gun went off. Apparently the tree moved because I found myself looking to the heavens after the gun went off. I was trying to shake it off and get back to my feet when I heard the rustling of leaves and branches coming towards me. Oh no I missed I thought. So I cocked the gun and rolled over to face the noise hoping I wouldn't miss this time. With finger on trigger I began to squeeze...........Double it was Double and she had some men with her. "Thank goodness your alright I radioed for help but you were so fast I couldn't keep up.""It was the shot that led us to you, what were you thinking coming back down here." It was the game warden I had taken the gun from. I couldn't answer him right off i was busy rolling around on the ground with my doggie she was licking my face and barking I think she knew I had come back to save her. They asked me where I had learned to shoot and I told them my grandfather had taught me years ago. It was a good thing to I nailed that bear right in the heart ....but lets not tell anyone I was aiming for the head. Needless to say they finished things up at that end and helped me back to the main trail where we bid good bye. As Double and I topped the ridge we could see home. Let's not tell anyone what happened they would never believe us. Double grunted as if to say she agreed and we went home. |
