Wallace and Gromit
directed by Nick Park

Wallace and Gromit are two clay-animated characters produced by Aardman Animatations and directed by Nick Park that has received a lot of attention lately. My first introduction to the two characters was during a film festival and I was instantly hooked.

Wallace is a typical (satirical version of a) British person: a gentleman who never says a nasty word and always has crackers and cheese for snacks. Gromit is his dog who is more than the average dog: reading the newspapers and books and able to help his master in odd tasks.

A movie was released, made up of three Wallace and Gromit segments, A Grand Day Out, The Wrong Trousers and A Close Shave, which is a must-see movie.

In A Grand Day Out, Wallace discovers to his horror that he has run out of cheese. While thinking of where to get cheese as well as planning his holiday, he hits on the perfect plan: a 'cheese holiday' on the moon ("Everybody knows the moon is made of cheese"). So, he and Gromit build a spaceship to go to the moon! A nicely done segment with wonderful laughs and situations.

Next, we have The Wrong Trousers. Wallace buys a present for Gromit on his birthday: a pair of robotic walking trousers to take him for his walks. But running short of money, he rents out a room to a penguin who may be more than he seems. This is an absolutely hilarious segment that, when I saw it, had the audience laughing and clapping at the antics.

Finally, we have A Close Shave. The pair are now working as window-cleaners (with an impressive 'Thunderbird-like' starting sequence). While washing the windows of a wool shop, Wallace sees Wendolene and falls in love. But Wendolene and her dog may hide a secret related to a series of sheep kidnappings going on. This segment was probably influenced by the movie, The Terminator, has wonderful sheep acrobatics (want to see how tens of sheep balance on a motorbike?) and the usual humour.

This is a must-watch movie. It has suspense, mystery, humour and wonderful clay-animation.
