UMYF February Report

Jody Stouffer reported on the following items:
Nursing Home Bingo - Bingo at the Lincoln Nursing Home had to be rescheduled to Sunday, Feb. 29 due to the snow.
Souper Bowl Lunch - The Souper Bowl Luncheon was a great success. We had 14 different chilis entered with Jenna Ledford's taking 1st place. $232.00 in donationswere collected for the Hickory Soup Kitchen and the Corner Table in Newton.
Retreats -The Winter Ski Retreat, Feb. 6-8 turned out wonderful. 7 youth and 4 adults attended. The excessive snow and ice didn't hamper our spirits! The skiers enjoyed a fun day on the slopes of the Appalachian Ski resort. Those that didn't ski enjoyed a quite day at the cabin playing cards and fixing a big italian spaghetti and meatball dinner for the others. Sunday morning the snow and ice kept us from attending church services but we had a very enriching bible study based off of the movie "Bruce Almighty". The next retreat will be the John's River Retreat scheduled for March 26-28. Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory will be the theme for this retreat. A retreat planing session is scheduled for Thursday, March 4 in the Fellowship Hall at 7:00pm.
2004 Mission Trip - Plans and reservations are continuing to be made for the 2004 New York City Mission Trip Scheduled for May 28-June 5. There are 7 adults and 8 youth attending.
ECCCM -The UMYF received a thank-you note from ECCCM for their $150.00 donation from the Haunted House earnings.
Salvation Army - The UMYF received a thank-you note from the Salvation Army thanking them for supporting a family this past Christmas.
Haunted House - Melissa reported that $6,300.00 was earned from the Haunted House Fundraiser this year. One more day of moving lumber will be needed to finish this project. The UMYF will need to find a new location next year if they are going to continue with the Haunted House because the current building will no longer be available.

The senior youth is comprised of students from 7th grade to college age. We do fun activities as well as sevice projects for our community and surrounding communities. Some service projects that we have participated in include: The Souper Bowl of Caring Luncheon, to benefit two of our local Soup Kitchens, monthly bingo at the Lincoln Nursing Home, Fundraisers for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Secret Santa through the Salvation Army, Samaritan's Purse Christmas Child Shoebox Project and Fundraiser for the Oxford Masonic Home.

We also like to have alot of fun. We usually go on three to four retreats each year. Our longest running retreat is at the John's River Valley Camp in Collettsville. Retreats we have attended in the past years include:
Winter Ski Retreat, Valle Crucis, NC
Garden City Beach Retreat, Garden City, SC
"Great White North Retreat" Hagerstown, MD
John's River Youth Retreat, Collettsville, NC
2002 NYC Mission Trip
2003 Boston Mission Trip
2004 NYC Mission Trip

We have also gone on several day trips including: white water rafting, Carrowinds Amusement Park, Christian Youth Day at Duke University, Hornets Games and Emerald Pointe Water Park

Our biggest project of the year is our House of Horrors which is completely operated by the youth and members of our church. It is a way to provide a fun, yet safe environment for the community to celebrate Halloween in a scary haunted house that is operated using christian morals.

Our youth membership fluctuates between 15-30 people depending on the activity we are doing. Visitors are always welcome to join us!
