If you haven't used makeup before, here's a list of things you will probably want:
Brushes/sponges/makeup applicators - The sponges and applicators are available at stores that sell regular 'beauty' makeup (look for latex wedge sponges, they are the most useful), and brushes at art supply or craft stores. You don't need super expensive brushes, but you will want ones that are of good enough quality that the bristles aren't falling out left and right. They are annoying to have on your face, and a pain to pick out of makeup, so it's best to avoid that as much as possible.
Powder - To set the kinds of makeup that need setting (cream, greasepaint). You can use baby powder (talc, not cornstarch - cornstarch will clump up) if you don't want to pay for the real setting powder. If you do get real setting powder, get the colorless type.
Large, soft brush - For getting rid of excess powder. A largge rouge brush works fine for me.
Soap/makeup remover - Read the label of your makeup. Some can be removed with soap and water, some need remover or cold cream. Make sure you have whatever you need to remove it before you put it on!
Mirror - Of course! You will want at least a regular mirror, but you may want a magnifying mirror (easily available many places that beauty makeup is sold) for doing detail work. For the most part, I find the magnification difficult to work with, but it may help some people.
Makeup - Greasepaint, liquid, cream or cake.
Definitions:
set : a process of powdering which makes the makeup so it won't smear easily.
- used for cream, grease and sometimes liquid. Read the label of your makeup, sometimes it will say if it should be powdered.
