Origin of the World

Chaos Reigns

In the beginning there was only Chaos - the void from which all things developed (not considered to be a god). This was all there was for an indeterminate amount of time. From Chaos alone, came the two primordial gods Nyx (goddess and personification of Night) and Erebus (personification of Darkness). Eventually, Nyx mated with her brother Erebus to create Aether (personification of the Bright Upper Atmosphere) and Hemera (goddess of Day). Some sources state that Eros (god and personification of Love) was also the offspring of Nyx and Erebus.

Nyx's Offspring

Nyx, alone, was the mother of Hypnos (personification of Sleep), Thanatos (personification of Death), and Moros (personification of Doom). In some instances, she is also the mother of Blame, Woe, The Fates, the Hesperides, Nemesis and Apate (Deceit). Nyx lived in a palace in the Underworld, and each night she went out into the world passing through the heavens and over the earth until daybreak.
